Lakers retain Russell on 2-year, $37M contract

The Los Angeles Lakers are re-signing guard D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $37-million contract that includes a player option, his agents told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Russell, who began his career with the Lakers, started his second stint with the club after being acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team blockbuster trade in February.

The 27-year-old point guard started 17 regular-season games for L.A. and another 15 in the postseason as the Lakers traveled to the conference finals. Russell averaged 17.4 points on .484% shooting in the regular season but struggled in the playoffs as his production dipped to 13.3 points on .426% shooting.

The former All-Star is averaging 17.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.5 rebounds across his eight-year career.

The Lakers have been busy in free agency, adding the likes of Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince, Cam Reddish, and Jaxson Hayes. They also brought back Rui Hachimura on a three-year, $51-million deal.
