Mets’ Cohen: Showalter, Eppler ‘absolutely’ keeping jobs for rest of season

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen wants to keep manager Buck Showalter and general manager Billy Eppler in their roles for the remainder of the season.

“Absolutely,” Cohen answered when asked if the two would stay put for the rest of the 2023 campaign, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.

The outspoken owner admitted the Mets’ season has been “incredibly frustrating,” but he isn’t interested in firing either of Showalter or Eppler to grab a headline because he believes reactionary moves like that could prevent his organization from attracting the best and brightest talent in the future.

“I’m a patient guy,” Cohen said, according to ESPN’s Joon Lee.

“Everybody wants a headline, fire this person, fire that person. But I don’t see that as a way to operate.”

The owner reiterated his desire to find a president of baseball operations to help with some of the front-office workload, but he isn’t going to rush that decision and make a mistake.

As for the team outside of the front office, Cohen said he still believes in the group the Mets are fielding, adding that if things don’t turn around soon they might be sellers at the trade deadline.

“It’s on the players. They are veterans. They have been there before … we will see if they can get their act together and string together some wins,” Cohen said, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma.

The Mets enter play Wednesday fourth in the NL East with a 36-43 record. They’re 8 1/2 games back of the last wild-card spot in the NL despite owning MLB’s largest payroll.
