Report: Brewers made strong push for Mets’ Alonso at trade deadline

The Milwaukee Brewers made a strong effort to acquire All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso from the New York Mets ahead of the trade deadline, sources told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The two teams differed on how close a deal was to coming to fruition, according to Rosenthal.

A Brewers source told Rosenthal that trade talks were getting closer, while the Mets felt a trade was never close to being completed.

Double-A outfielder Jackson Chourio, the Brewers’ top prospect and MLB.com‘s No. 2 overall prospect, wasn’t included in trade discussions, a source told Rosenthal.

The Chicago Cubs also discussed Alonso trade possibilities with the Mets, according to Rosenthal.

Alonso addressed the report following the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

“I don’t know what the future holds, but right now, I’m a Met,” Alonso said, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. “And I love being a Met.”

Alonso has one year of team control remaining before he’s scheduled to reach free agency at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed another strong season at the plate despite the Mets’ disappointing record. Alonso owns a .856 OPS with 39 home runs and 95 RBIs across 119 games.

The two-time Home Run Derby champion has developed into one of baseball’s premier sluggers during his five-year career. Alonso has registered a .878 OPS with 185 home runs and 475 RBIs in 649 career games with the Mets.
