Report: Bucks sign Giannis to 3-year, $186M max extension

The Milwaukee Bucks signed two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to a three-year, $186-million contract extension, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Antetokounmpo, who had been vocal about his desire for the Bucks to remain competitive in order to keep him in the organization long term, is now under contract through at least 2027, with a reported player option for 2027-28.

The Greek Freak alluded to the reported extension Monday on X (formerly Twitter).

His salary will increase in each campaign, capped at the $66.8-million player option in the final year, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Antetokounmpo was previously under contract for only the next two seasons.

Milwaukee made a major splash this offseason to widen its championship window, trading for superstar point guard Damian Lillard to complement Antetokounmpo’s dominant inside presence.

Still, should Antetokounmpo accept his player option in 2027-28, Lillard would be 37, and fellow key starters Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez would be 36 and 39, respectively. Antetokounmpo would be 32.

The Bucks suffered back-to-back disappointing playoff exits since winning the NBA championship in 2021. As a result, the team opted for the move for Lillard and a coaching swap from Mike Budenholzer to former Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin.

Antetokounmpo has been as good as ever since winning his Most Valuable Player awards in 2019 and 2020. Last year’s 31.1 points per game was the highest mark of his career, and he also averaged 11.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
