Report: Commanders unlikely to be punished for alleged tampering with Luck

The Washington Commanders are unlikely to face any penalties regarding tampering allegations involving retired quarterback Andrew Luck, sources told The Washington Post’s Mark Maske and Nicki Jhabvala.

There is “not enough hard evidence” of impermissible contact for the Commanders to face punishment, Maske and Jhabvala report.

Washington reportedly contacted the former four-time Pro Bowl passer as the team deliberated about its options at quarterback during the 2022 offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts requested that the league investigate whether the Commanders contacted the former signal-caller, whose contractual rights remain with Indianapolis. It doesn’t appear that the league initiated a formal investigation into allegations regarding the Commanders.

A person close to Luck said that Washington didn’t contact Luck, his father, or his uncle, who served as his agent. The 2012 first overall pick hasn’t given any indication that he’s interested in making a return to the field. The Stanford product led Indianapolis to a 53-33 record as a starter.

Luck stunned the league when he announced his retirement after seven seasons at the age of 29. Injuries played a significant role in his decision to walk away from the game. He signed a five-year, $122.97-million extension with the Colts in 2016.

Second-year passer Sam Howell is expected to lead the Commanders’ offense next season. The club also signed veteran Jacoby Brissett to serve as a backup.
