Tua expects to sign extension with Dolphins: ‘I believe that will happen’

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said he expects to sign a contract extension with the club this offseason.

“I believe that will happen,” Tagovailoa said Friday, according to Pro Football Network’s Adam Beasley. “But I’m gonna let my agents, gonna let … (general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel), let those guys talk about that and let them move forward accordingly.”

Tagovailoa is slated to earn $23.17 million next season after the Dolphins exercised his fifth-year option, per Over the Cap. He’d be eligible for the franchise tag or free agency after the 2024 season if he doesn’t ink a long-term extension with Miami.

The No. 5 pick in the 2020 draft earned his first Pro Bowl nod after throwing for 4,624 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions on 69.3% passing in 2023, all career highs. His yardage mark also led the NFL.

Despite posting his best statistical season to date, the 25-year-old acknowledged there are parts of his game that can improve.

“There’s probably four things that I wanna get better at,” Tagovailoa said. “Am I gonna share? Probably not. But I’m looking forward to OTAs when we get to see you guys again, and you guys can see us.”

Tagovailoa has totaled 12,639 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions in 53 career games. The Dolphins have posted a 32-19 record in his 51 starts.
