Vikings acquire Dobbs from Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are trading quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings, both teams announced Tuesday.

The Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to a season-ending Achilles injury in last Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings sent a sixth-round pick to the Cardinals for Dobbs and a seventh-round pick. The seventh-rounder could become a sixth-rounder for Minnesota based on unspecified conditions, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 1-7 Cardinals acquired Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns in late August for a fifth-round pick.

The veteran started the first eight games for Arizona with Kyler Murray sidelined, completing 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards and eight touchdowns against five interceptions. He also ran for 258 yards and three scores.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Monday that rookie Clayton Tune would start in Week 9 over Dobbs if Murray isn’t ready to return from his ACL injury.

Dobbs will likely compete with rookie Jaren Hall for the Vikings’ starting job for the remainder of the campaign. However, Hall will start Sunday’s road game against the Atlanta Falcons, while the newly acquired veteran will “potentially” act in a supportive role, head coach Kevin O’Connell said Tuesday, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.

After starting 0-3, Minnesota has turned around its season by winning four of its last five games.
