Bryan Fuller Says Nothing is Off Limits in Friday the 13th Prequel Series

It’s official: the Friday the 13th franchise is getting a revival, this time as a streaming series on Peacock. It was recently reported that Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) is on board to write and serve as showrunner on Crystal Lake, a series set in the years before the original Friday the 13th series. Because of the legal battle over the rights to the series, the original report also stated that Crystal Lake could only acknowledge elements featured in the first Friday the 13th film. However, Fuller has now offered some clarification on Crystal Lake, denying that he doesn’t have access to the hockey mask and other incarnations of Jason Voorhees that fans will recognize.

The update comes straight from Fuller in a new interview with Fangoria. While there’s only so much Fuller can share about Crystal Lake at this time, he wanted to debunk the notion that he can’t include references to any of the Friday the 13th sequels. According to Fuller, everything is on the table, even Uber Jason from Jason X. In fact, should Crystal Lake span ten seasons, Fuller will see to it that Jason returns to outer space. From the interview:

“Everything. We can use everything. We can go to Hell, we can go to space. That’s not to say that we will do those things … although if we do go 10 seasons, I will be lobbying hard to go to space.”

Crystal Lake is also not quite a prequel, though it sort of is, as Fuller adds. While he can’t say exactly what he means, Fuller teases that the series will also serve as a Friday the 13th remake, meaning there may be some changes made to the story as seen in the original movie penned by Victor Miller. As Fuller explains:

“I don’t think I’m allowed to say just yet, but I would say it’s less a prequel series than a … pre-remake-uel series.”

Crystal Lake Will Be No Less Violent Than the Friday the 13th Movies

Paramount Pictures

While there has been a Friday the 13th series in the past, it did not feature Jason Voorhees, as it only shared its name with the films. Crystal Lake will be the first series that’s actually about Jason and his maniacal mother, Pamela Voorhees, who was played by the late Betsy Palmer in the original film. But even if the film is partially a prequel, we shouldn’t count on there being any less carnage than what we’ve seen over the course of the movie series, as Fuller goes on to tease while reiterating his desire to send Jason back to the stars.

“It will be pretty murderous! I think we’ll be dropping bodies every episode, and I think there’s something about the build of that, as we are hopefully in for the long haul. I wasn’t kidding: if we get 10 seasons, I’m going to make a concerted effort to find a way to rationally and dramatically and, in some fashion, go to space. I can’t imagine it going 10 seasons, but I will put that out there that, uh … well, I haven’t gotten past laying out the first three seasons, honestly, so I suppose it’s very easy for me to say, yeah, if we get to 10 seasons, we’re going to space. Wait and see!”

There hasn’t yet been an official premiere date set for Crystal Lake at Peacock. With the series officially announced, let’s hope more fruitful updates are coming in the near future.
