Final Space Creator to Conclude Canceled Series With Independent Graphic Novel

In September of 2022, Final Space was another casualty in the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery. Olan Rogers, the show’s creator, vowed to keep fighting for his series. Yesterday morning, Rogers announced the news on his YouTube channel, Final Space will have its conclusion in the form of a graphic novel. The video announcement can be viewed below.

I tried every contact that I had that I knew of… I did everything that you possibly could do for two years! I was ready to fight for this as long as it took. That fight ended last week.

After fighting for so long, Warner Bros. Discovery gave Rogers the license to make a single graphic novel. He explained that this was solely for the purpose that he could finish his story, and the grounds were very limited. Rogers explains the conditions of the deal, describing it as an “insane challenge”. It’s very clear that Warner Bros. Discovery is not giving any assistance to Rogers for this project.

  • Rogers is not allowed to do any sort of crowdfunding (Kickstarter, Gofundme, etc)
  • Rogers can only sell the graphic novel on a website that he owns. Meaning no selling through other marketplaces such as Amazon, Walmart, or Barnes n’ Noble.
  • Rogers has to self-publish the graphic novel, no selling through a third-party publisher.
  • The graphic novel can only exist in hard-copy format, so no digital publishing or selling like Comixology.
  • No animation or voices can be used (presumably in the marketing).
  • While these rules sound like a nightmare to navigate, Rogers is taking the opportunity in stride.

When I read this, I don’t see restrictions; I see the possibilities. I know for some of you this might not be the ending that you wanted, but it’s the one that’s possible. It’s the one that’s real, and it’s the one that’s legal. Sometimes you just gotta play the hand that you’re dealt. And I’m gonna play this hand with a massive smile on my face!

Rogers goes on to say that the project will take a long time, possibly mid to end 2024, to complete. Rogers lists off the various steps for production that have to be considered, but also notes that “there’s a lot to wrap up in this story.” Following this, he notes that “this is going to be a chunky graphic novel.”

Rogers says that he is “hitting the ground running” with this project and has already put the graphic novels up for pre-order on his website, finalspaceends.com. Copies of the graphic novel are priced at $125.

I checked on a lot of sites, I red-lined all the things. We’re talking hardback, dust jacket, all that stuff. I red-lined it and I tried to see what the cost could be for around four to five hundred pages. I’m guessing it might be a little bit bigger than that. I don’t know. So I’m allotting for a little more leeway into this in case I have to make more pages. I want to wrap everything up in this thing. I have to! If I’m gonna have one graphic novel, I want to make it a big one.

The pre-order window will be open up until the graphic novel is up for production, giving fans enough time to save up for their copies if they need to. The option to pay in installments through Shop Pay is also available. Because of the conditions of the deal, there is also a limit on how many graphic novels that can be sold. As of writing this article, there are currently just over 1850 copies left available for pre-order. Rogers will also sign every copy.

The Final Bow Of Final Space

    Final Space

Final Space started out as Gary Space, a web series by Rogers on his personal Facebook channel in 2010, but went on hiatus three episodes in. After several ups and downs, Rogers rebooted the series, renaming it Final Space. The new show premiered on TBS in 2018. After its first season run, the show moved to Adult Swim and was renewed for a second, then third, season.

Final Space follows Gary Goodspeed, an optimistic but naïve astronaut who befriends a planet-destroying alien that he names Mooncake. The two cross paths with several new friends while evading the evil Lord Commander on their quest to save the universe. With its endearing characters, the show grew a quick cult following, making the cancellation all the more upsetting last year.

Those fans, and Rogers, will soon have their closure. Even with such steep restrictions, Gary, Mooncake, Avocato, Little Cato, and all the rest can say their final goodbyes. Will you be getting your copy?
