James Gunn Debunks Harley Quinn Prequel Series Rumors

There doesn’t seem to be a Harley Quinn prequel show in the works for the DCU at this time, despite recent rumors. Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed to steer the ship at DC Studios, the future of Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn in the DCU has remained unclear. Given how Gunn brought back Robbie to reprise the role for The Suicide Squad, it seems possible that the two could reunite for a future project, though nothing has been officially announced.

However, a recent rumor has emerged online that Robbie will return as Harley Quinn for a prequel series set before she becomes the supervillain. According to the rumor, the series would be called Harleen, a reference to the character’s birth name of Harleen Quinzel. The idea would be to tell the “story of how her need to save the Joker led to her mind being shattered.” One fan proceeded to forward the rumor to Gunn on Twitter, asking if there was any truth to the rumors, and Gunn bluntly had this to say:

“There is not [any truth to the rumors].”

For what it’s worth, Gunn has previously promised that Robbie’s Harley Quinn will return, though he has never said exactly how he plans to use the character again. When asked by a fan in September 2022 if that Harley would be back, Gunn would only respond with a simple, “Yes.” This comment was made weeks before Gunn and Safran were appointed as new heads of DC Studios.

It may be for the best that the rumored Harleen series isn’t happening. The story may be too reminiscent of the upcoming feature film Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips’ follow-up to Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. The film has been revealed to bring in Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, and the Arkham Asylum setting suggests that the movie will be focusing on the blossoming of the relationship between Harley and the Joker. Having a separate series doing the same with a different Harley might be too much, especially given the character’s evolution into becoming her own person, having ditched the Joker at this point in most modern adaptations.

In any case, we can be pretty sure that Harley Quinn will pop up in one way or another in the DCU at some point down the road, given the continued popularity of the character. For now, fans can expect to see Lady Gaga turn in her take on the role when the Joker sequel is released in theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
