Napoleon and Ferrari Lead the Charge of Biggest Golden Globes Snubs

Summary

  • The Golden Globe nominations were dominated by Barbenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
  • Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Michael Mann’s Ferrari were notable snubs from the film categories.
  • Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Swarm and Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s Reservation Dogs were completely shut out from nominations in the television categories.

It wouldn’t be the start of awards season announcements without surprises, and the Golden Globes nominations have delivered just that. The nominations, presented today by Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama, were unsurprisingly dominated by Barbenheimer; Greta Gerwig’s Barbie led the pack with nine nods, while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer secured eight nominations. Martin Scorsese’s epic The Killers of the Flower Moon and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things each earned seven nominations. Gerwig, Nolan, Scorsese, and Lanthimos all earned Best Director nominations, along with Bradley Cooper for Maestro and Celine Song for Past Lives.

However, the surprise snubs from the announcement were just as noteworthy. In the film categories, there were two very obvious omissions: Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix (who did earn a nomination for Beau is Afraid), and Michael Mann’s Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz; both films have garnered Oscars buzz but failed to land any Golden Globe nominations. Two other critically acclaimed films also didn’t receive any nods: Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw, led by Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, and Ava DuVernay’s Origin, starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The Color Purple (an adaptation of the Broadway musical) didn’t receive a Best Picture Musical or Comedy nod, and while Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks both earned nominations, one notable name was left out: Taraji P. Henson, who portrays Shug Avery in the film.

Now that the nominations are confirmed and open to public scrutiny, social media users have plenty of opinions. One category that has sparked some confusion is Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The Color Purple’s Brooks is joined by Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Julianne Moore (May December), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers). While that’s an impressive roster of talent, there are two other actresses whose performances many argue deserve recognition: Viola Davis for playing Deloris Jordan in Air and America Ferrera for her role as toy designer and mom Gloria for Barbie. Ferrera’s absence from the list seems to have social media users up in a tizzy, with many taking to X to express their discontent:

Viewers are also shaking their head at the omission of Godzilla Minus One from the Best Picture, Non-English Category (France’s Anatomy of a Fall, Finland’s Fallen Leaves, Italy’s Io Capitano, Spain’s Society of Snow, United Kingdom’s The Zone of Interest and United States’ Past Lives made the cut for that category). The Japanese kaiju film has received universal critical acclaim, but it seems that it was not put forward for consideration in the category.

On the television side of things, Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Swarm and Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s Reservation Dogs (which concluded with its third season this year), were shockingly completely shut out from receiving any nominations. Shrinking and 1923 star Harrison Ford (who was eligible for his roles in both series) was also snubbed. While Abbott Elementary landed a Best Television Series Musical or Comedy nod, and Quinta Brunson secured a Best Actress nomination, none of the critically acclaimed series’ remaining ensemble cast secured nominations.

The Golden Globes will take place on January 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air on CBS.
