Patrick Stewart Wants to Move Forward with a Star Trek: Picard Movie

The revered Star Trek universe may once again have the pleasure of reuniting with one of its most cherished captains, Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by the distinguished Patrick Stewart. The indelible series Star Trek: Picard recently culminated its third season, evoking an amalgamation of nostalgia and triumph. However, the end of the series has not quenched Patrick Stewart’s thirst for further space adventures.

In a candid revelation with IndieWire, Stewart conveyed his enthusiasm for reprising his role in a feature film. He envisions a movie not just centered around Picard, but encompassing the rich tapestry of characters that comprise The Next Generation. Specifically, Stewart believes that the fabric of Season 3 of Picard contains the potential for weaving an extraordinary cinematic tale.

The veteran actor’s fervor for this idea is palpable as he actively discusses it, although he concedes that there has not been an eager response to the proposal as of yet. He poignantly suggests that a Next Generation movie could serve as a fitting swan song for the beloved characters. Stewart shared:

“I think we could do a movie, a ‘Picard’-based movie,” he said. “Now not necessarily at all about Picard but about all of us. And to take many of those wonderful elements, particularly from Season 3 of ‘Picard’ and take out of that what I think could be an extraordinary movie. I keep telling people and mentioning it, and so far there’s been no eager response, but it might well happen. And that would be I think a very appropriate way to say, ‘And goodbye folks.’

While the echoes of Captain Picard’s “Engage” may have faded with the series’ conclusion, whispers of what might follow fill the air. Showrunner Terry Matalas proffered an audacious idea for a spinoff, tentatively titled Star Trek: Legacy. Envisioned to be set in the 25th century, Legacy could traverse the lineage of The Last Generation and The Next Generation. Despite the concept receiving positive feedback, Matalas stresses that it remains a pipe dream, with no concrete plans for development.

In Star Trek: Picard, the series embarks several years after the finale of The Next Generation. It summoned the illustrious Jean-Luc Picard back to the helm as he grapples with ghosts of his past. The series’ third season was particularly lauded for reassembling nearly the entire original cast, including Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, and Brent Spiner.

With a touch that only Star Trek can master, the series served as both a homecoming and a befitting adieu to the cherished crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. For those yearning to relive the odyssey or immerse themselves for the first time, Picard is available to stream on Paramount+.

Patrick Stewart’s unquenched ardor to don the Starfleet uniform once again as Jean-Luc Picard may steer the Star Trek franchise to unexplored territories. As of now there are no official plans for a movie or a spinoff series. It might happen with the fervor of Stewart and the showrunners coupled with the fanbase’s unwavering support.

Only time will tell if the stars will for Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise. As the Star Trek mantra goes, “To boldly go where no one has gone before.”
