Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury Is Showing His Age in New Secret Invasion Image

Nick Fury has been the architect of the MCU’s Avengers team from the moment he appeared in the post credit scene of Iron Man in 2018. After 15 years, Samuel L. Jackson’s character is finally taking the lead in his own project, Secret Invasion, but this is going to be a very different Nick Fury to the one we have previously seen as a new look from the series has revealed.

Marvel Studios/ Empire Magazine

Samuel L. Jackson is going to have quite a year with two appearances as Nick Fury, the former S.H.I.E.L.D operative who will be teaming up with Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau in The Marvels this November. First up however, is the long-awaited debut of Secret Invasion, which will hit Disney+ on June 21 after a lengthy delay. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Jackson explained how there is something much more raw and real about this version of Fury, and MCU fans will see him at his most vulnerable. He said:

“Here you have a guy who’s showing his face, and showing his age. It’s an opportunity to humanize someone that everybody thinks is superhuman. I had to figure out some stuff and work out some new things, which I’ve been trying to do for a while. It’s great to have an opportunity to find out who he was and delve into how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life.”

How Does Secret Invasion Show A More Human Nick Fury?

Marvel Studios
Disney

In a franchise where most characters are either superhuman or can be resurrected through various means, Secret Invasion takes a new view of the MCU. As well as coming with one of the highest age ratings of the entire franchise, the series also sets out to show the world that Fury is only human. As Empire’s image shows, Fury is not the same leather-coated, eye-patch wearing confident guy we are used to seeing in the franchise. The removal of these Fury trademarks, along with replacing his neat goatee with a bushy grey beard, are all part of the plan as according to Jackson, “All these things are part of a Nick Fury that’s invulnerable.”

While Secret Invasion is going to provide Fury with his biggest challenge to date, Jackson hopes that this isn’t the end of the road for a character he loves. While we know that he will be back in The Marvels later this year, there are still questions over where the two appearances sit in the Marvel timeline in relation to each other. Expressing his desire to continue on as Fury for a while yet, Jackson concluded:

“I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has. So hopefully I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way.”
