Summary

  • The Last of Us Season 2 production is set to begin in early 2024, with setbacks from strikes delaying its release for HBO’s 2024 lineup.
  • The first season of The Last of Us received critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations, showcasing the impact of the series.
  • Despite the challenges, the team at HBO and the talented cast and crew are committed to delivering an enchanting second season of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Season 2 is poised to start its production process in early 2024, as HBO’s Casey Bloys informed an eager audience of journalists and fans. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the esteemed television adaptation of the iconic PlayStation video game. Unexpected interruptions, notably the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, pushed back the show’s production schedule. As a result of these setbacks, the sophomore season of the series didn’t make the cut for HBO’s 2024 lineup. This hints at the possibility of the show gracing our screens in 2025 or later, as per Variety.

January 2023 marked a monumental moment for HBO when they launched the inaugural season of The Last of Us. Its storyline, which is deeply rooted in a post-apocalyptic America devastated by a lethal fungus, quickly garnered a massive following. The series dives into the life of Joel, brilliantly portrayed by Pedro Pascal, a smuggler navigating this dystopian landscape. His mission? Escort a young girl named Ellie, played by the talented Bella Ramsey, across this perilous nation, in hopes of developing a cure for the cordyceps fungus. Their trek is riddled with challenges – from confrontations with other survivors and ruthless bandits to nightmarish encounters with clickers, individuals horrifically mutated by the infection, making them appear as though they have fungi erupting from their physique.

Even before the curtains dropped on the final episode of the first season, HBO had confirmed a renewal for a second installment. The Last of Us: Part II stands as a memorable continuation for enthusiasts of the video game series. Anticipation builds as the chapter prepares to transition to television, courtesy of Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the creative forces behind the game and the show, respectively. Yet, the shadow of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes looms large, halting the progression of this eagerly awaited season.

In a conversation with Druckmann voiced the team’s preparedness, stating, “We’ve outlined all of Season 2 and we’re ready to go as soon as the strike ends.” Echoing this sentiment, Mazin provided a more detailed insight:

“We were able to map out all of Season 2. And I also wrote and submitted the script for the first episode and sent it in to HBO moments before the WGA strike was officially in effect. It’s frustrating because the delay means we can’t kick off filming as per our initial plans. But trust me, our team is chomping at the bit.”

The premiere season of The Last of Us sent shockwaves far beyond what one might call significant. Its impact on the entertainment industry is evident in its impressive tally of 24 Emmy nominations. Among these nods, the series received recognition in the ‘outstanding drama series’ category, while the brilliant performances by Pascal and Ramsey earned them nominations for lead actor and actress, respectively.

The path to the second season may have been tumultuous, but the commitment of HBO’s team and their star-studded cast and crew to creating another enchanting season remains unshaken.
