Tom Cruise’s Dystopian Thriller Noir ‘Minority Report’ Arrives on Streaming

One of Steven Spielberg’s most underrated movies is Minority Report, the action thriller starring Tom Cruise. More than 20 years after its original release, the dystopian sci-fi film has found a new streaming home, and fans of the genre will be able to stream one of Cruise’s best films without paying anything. Starting July 1, the film will be on Tubi, and to stream the movie, viewers will just have to stick around for the occasional ad breaks.

The futuristic sci-fi film is based on Philip K. Dick’s story The Minority Report. It follows Cruise as the chief of a new police unit known as Precrime. Using advanced technology and the psychic ability of three “precogs,” Chief John Anderton is able to foresee crimes. When he observes the crimes before they’re committed, Anderton and his partners stop the perpetrators and serve justice. During an evaluation by the Department of Justice, Anderton finds an unbelievable prediction: he sees himself killing a man he doesn’t know. His only option is to run and try to find the answers himself while the police look for him. Per the film’s official plot synopsis:

John works with the PreCrime police, who stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three “PreCogs” who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.

Steven Spielberg’s Best Movie Villains

Contrary to what people may think, there’s some evil in Steven Spielberg’s films and these fine villains are the proof.

Minority Report was met with critical acclaim, with some naming it one of Spielberg’s best works. At the box office, Minority Report grossed over $358 million from a $102 million production budget. The reception by critics was great, and today it sits at 89% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score (the Popcornmeter) sits slightly below with an 80% score. Famed critic Roger Ebert called Minority Report “mainstream moviemaking at its most sublime,” and named it the best film of 2002.

The 2002 action thriller stars Cruise along with Colin Farrell, Max von Sydow, Neal McDonough, Lois Smith, Kathryn Morris, Mike Harris, and Peter Stormare. Samantha Morton as Agatha, a precog, delivers one of her best film performances ever.

Other films landing on Tubi include Terminator 2: Judgment Day, all the Robocop movies, The Running Man and Tom Cruise’s other major collaboration with Spielberg, War of the Worlds.

One of the Best Tom Cruise Movies Outside of ‘Mission: Impossible’

20th Century Fox

While he was trying to break out of the action star stereotype, Cruise made one of his best action films. This was after Magnolia and Vanilla Sky, and before films like The Last Samurai and Collateral. Perhaps his decision to do the action film was driven by the fact that he was finally getting the chance to work with one of his idols. It’s not a coincidence that Minority Report is a joint production between DreamWorks Pictures, Amblin Entertainment and Cruise/Wagner Productions (and 20th Century Fox), studios led by Spielberg and Cruise.

The tech noir thriller is, without question, one of Cruise’s best films outside his signature franchises, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. It’s a gripping action feature, with plenty of tension and elaborate set pieces. However, it also makes the viewer ask some questions about the moral implications of its premise. It’s the sole reason why Colin Farrell’s exceptional character exists, to ask questions that no one dares to think about, because the Precrime system is undoubtedly useful in stopping crime.
