Natasha Lyonne on Poker Face, Russian Doll & Praises Rian Johnson

Before she became much more popular with Netflix’s hit series Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne was an always-around artist, from minor roles in the blockbuster like Ad Astra, to Orange is the New Black series and many animation projects.

After Lyonne’s time-loop drama-comedy series on Netflix, the world got to know the 43-year-old actress better; she became an LGBT icon, writer, and producer. But it’s hard to exist as a female artist in an industry that has recently been upended by scandals, but Knives Out and Glass Onion director Rian Johnson is one of the few filmmakers to back Lyonne. She discussed their relationship in a new interview with Variety.

”When women are doing a lot of those jobs, that can feel intimidating. With all the excitement of Russian Doll Season 1, Rian was the only person who came to me saying, ‘I really want to come up with something for us to do together’ and then he followed through.” she said.

Lyonne stars as Charlie Cale, who has a unique ability to catch the lies of the people she tracks and tries to solve various crimes in each episode of the Poker Face series created by Rian Johnson. The cast of the series includes Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nick Nolte, and Ron Perlman, ”When I saw Natasha in ‘Russian Doll’ I couldn’t take my eyes off her.” Johnson said.

‘I’m Dying to Direct a Feature’

Netflix

Lyonne has not directed a feature film yet in her long career, although she has directed various episodes in the projects she is on the screen. She said in previous statements that she couldn’t find time to write the new season of Russian Doll because she was busy with multiple projects. The number of these projects may increase if she directs a film. Also, she announced that she quit smoking, which has become an icon of her and Nadia from the series, ”I’ve been putting it off for so long. I’m naturally wired for self-destructive crutches. I f*cking love a vice.” she says.

”I’m taking this time to get very quiet. I’m dying to direct a feature, so I’ve been taking a lot of time to read books and see what’s worth adapting. I’m also working on my own scripts and rewriting scripts I’ve already written.”
