Deion Sanders delivered a blunt assessment after suffering his first loss as the head coach of Colorado.
“A good, old-fashioned butt-kicking,” Sanders said when asked about his team’s performance postgame, according to David Ubben of The Athletic. “No excuses. Their coaches did a good job preparing their team. Obviously, we didn’t.”
Oregon raced out to a 35-0 lead before halftime and didn’t look back, completing a 42-6 rout of Colorado. Sanders doesn’t believe that Colorado needed to be humbled after beginning the season 3-0.
“It’s not something we needed,” Sanders noted, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. “That’s like saying we needed a car wreck. It’s like saying you needed that. That’s stupid.”
Sanders offered a fairly simple reason for why his team suffered such a lopsided defeat: “We played like hot garbage,” he said.
Colorado captured the attention of the nation ahead of the marquee Pac-12 matchup. The Buffaloes began the season with a statement victory over TCU and earned another pair of wins against Nebraska and rival Colorado State.
Sanders, who has become the face of the Buffaloes, added, “Teams are trying to beat me. They aren’t trying to beat our team. That’s what it really is. It is what it is. I signed up for it.”
Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was kept in check for most of the afternoon. He completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 159 yards and one touchdown.
Ducks quarterback Bo Nix passed for 276 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns in Saturday’s victory. Troy Franklin led the way for all Oregon pass-catchers with eight catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
Oregon bottled up the Buffaloes’ offense, limiting them to just 40 rushing yards. Colorado didn’t help its own cause by piling up 12 penalties for 103 yards in the defeat.
In light of sustaining his first defeat as Colorado’s coach, Sanders remains confident in his team’s prospects for the remainder of the season.
“You better get me right now. This is the worst we’re going to be,” he said.
