First, there was Yellowstone. Then came a modern-day resurgence of western-style television that hasn’t exactly cooled off in recent years. And it’s extended beyond Paramount+, with Netflix recently joining in on the action.
Ransom Canyon debuted on the streaming giant back in April, and season 2 was greenlit just recently. Minka Kelly and Josh Duhamel lead the on-screen ensemble, the latter of whom can also be spotted on the big screen of late with a new action thriller from Lionsgate. MovieWeb recently caught up with Duhamel while he was promoting Off the Grid, and the longtime actor took time to reflect on his Netflix series thus far — and what’s possible in season 2 of Ransom Canyon.

Jack Schumacher spoke to MovieWeb leading up to the release of his new Netflix Western series and shared details surrounding its future.
“I totally trust Will Sayre April Blair and the writing team. They’re really, really, really good, so I’m guessing it’s going to be fun,” Duhamel told MovieWeb. “There’s probably going to be, you know, more tension between [my character] Staten and [Minka’s character] Quinn. But also, I hope that there’s some struggle with, you know, this land that he holds so dear, you know. And he doesn’t have any family left. So it’s about, you know, extended family at this point and passing it on to them. So there’s definitely a lot of different directions the story could go, but I trust that April and her team are going to do an amazing job.”
“Not Going to Give This Up”

Similar to Staten in Ransom, Duhamel’s wildly intelligent character named Guy in Off the Grid is a bit of a lone wolf — and protecting an extremely valuable asset that others are after throughout the film. “I’ve been doing [acting] for 25 years, and the stuff that I’m drawn to is stuff that is like Ransom. It’s very much about, like, family and legacy and land and water, passing things down to the next generation — somewhat similar to what Guy’s dealing with,” said Duhamel “I guess Guy’s situation is a quite a bit different. But, you know, it’s really about protecting what he believes is right, you know? And same with Ransom Canyon, in his heart he believes that, you know, no matter what, we’re not going to give this up, you know? This is part of our family.”
Interestingly, Duhamel lives a bit “off the grid” in real life, as his new movie’s title goes. He opened up to MovieWeb about how the project touched him in a personal way:
“That’s one of the first things that drew me to the script — was this idea that this guy takes this invention, this cold fusion technology that was intended to provide free energy to the world, but it had different intentions for the government. They wanted to weaponize it, and he took it in and ran… and went off into the deep woods to hide, and had to become proficient at all the basics from feeding him, finding water and food and, you know, shelter, and all these things that I think we take for granted. And I’ve become a bit obsessed with that myself over the last 15, 16, years.”
