Maisie Williams Says Game of Thrones ‘Fell Off’ in the Final Season

Though her character did not meet a tragic end that befell so many others, Maisie Williams is not the biggest fan of the final season of Game of Thrones. From the very start of the series, Maisie had starred as fan favorite Arya Stark, one of the show’s standout characters. Her story was left open-ended at the end of the series with some fans calling for a spinoff that follows Arya on her new adventures.

While the fans loved Arya, they weren’t so hot on the show’s final season, which generated so much controversy with how the storylines were wrapped up that a popular petition was launched to reshoot the whole thing. While Williams isn’t going that far, she has suggested in a recent Twitch stream (via Variety) during a chat with brother James Williams that she similarly felt unsatisfied when she recently watched the series. She first explained how the show “started really strong” and expressed how grateful she is to have been on that ride.

“It kinda popped off,” she said. “For the longest time… I could never see it from the outside. So I could never say that and actually understand it. For the first time, it feels good to be proud of it. It was 10 years of my life.”

Even so, despite the strong start and overall enjoyment she had of the show when rewatching it, Williams also noted that Game of Thrones “definitely fell off at the end.”

While the Game of Thrones franchise has expanded with the prequel series House of Dragon just recently wrapping up its first season, there has been word of a Kit Harington-led sequel series about Jon Snow entering development as well. It’s possible Wiliams would return as Arya Stark in that series. It’s also just as possible Williams could similarly be given her own spinoff that puts Arya front and center. In any case, Williams told People shortly after the news broke about the Jon Snow series that she was saying “never say never” about a potential return, acknowledging that there was more story to tell with the character.

“It’s obviously a very exciting prospect, so never say never,” she said, noting that she doesn’t know yet what such a spinoff would look like. “I’m still kind of piecing together what I think it should be, what I think would make people happy, and what I think would be fulfilling as well, as an actor, to do some kind of transition. We can’t just do the same thing that we did — it’s got to be new. But what are the parts that we would want to take with us and what are the parts that we would do differently? So I think I’m still kind of discovering that.”

For now, the focus is on House of the Dragon with the series performing well in its first season. The finale managed to reach 9.3 million live viewers, marking the highest season finale to air on HBO since the original Game of Thrones series finale in 2019. You can find the show streaming on HBO Max.
