Charlize Theron, the Academy Award-winning actor in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster, and Atomic Blonde, is also known for her roles as producer on major works. Among them is the Netflix crime series Mindhunter, which Theron executive produced throughout its run. The show was shockingly canceled by the streamer at the peak of its popularity after Season 2, and fans have been pleading for a third and final season. A few days ago, star Holt McCallany shared a surprising piece of news that got our hopes up, and now Theron has offered her opinion on the matter. According to Theron, it all lies in the hands of show creator David Fincher.
Theron is currently promoting her latest film, the action sequel released by Netflix, The Old Guard 2. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter about the movie (she’s also credited as producer), the actor was asked about the future of Mindhunter, the thriller series that sees FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench teaming up to interview real-life killers as they become the pioneers of criminal profiling. Theron claims she doesn’t know much about McCallany’s recent statement, but she doesn’t shut down the possibility of making Mindhunter Season 3. By this point, it all depends on Fincher himself:
“I think you know just as well as I do that it’s really in the world of David. It’s up to him, and if he wraps his head around it, then it will happen.
“I know that he loves this world just as much as I do, but he only does things when he really feels like there’s potential in it. He’s a realist, and if he wants to do it, he’ll do it.”

Why Netflix’s Mindhunter Needs a Season 3
The third season of Mindhunter would have taken the pioneering FBI criminal profilers to Hollywood’s glitzy and glamorous land.
It is a mystery whether Mindhunter could see a return in the near future. Fincher’s next confirmed project is the sequel to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (a Netflix production), and he has been rumored to be developing an English-language version of Squid Game. A few years ago, he said that if Mindhunter Season 3 were to happen, it wouldn’t be on Netflix, meaning that those conversations he supposedly had with McCallany regard the show’s possible exit from the streamer.
Is ‘Mindhunter’ Based on a True Story?
Netflix
Although the series follows a real-life FBI unit that was created to specialize in criminal profiling, the lead characters are not named after real people. Ford and Tench are characters inspired by John E. Douglas and Robert Ressler, two real-life agents who worked together in the 1970s in the Behavioral Science Unit. Their job was based on interviewing real criminals in order to put together profiles that could help them capture offenders. Douglas eventually co-wrote the book that inspired the series Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, while Ressler has been credited with creating the concept of “serial killer.”
However, there are other characters in the show that are inspired by real-life serial killers, with their characterizations being deemed some of the best aspects of the show. From Charles Manson to David Berkowitz, Mindhunter features realistic portrayals of hall-of-fame serial killers, with Cameron Britton’s rendering of Ed Kemper standing at the very top. Not only is the physical resemblance eerie, but the show delivers an uncompromised version of the facts — dialogues based on real interviews that include the details of what these monsters are able to do. After these scenes, it won’t matter if the show is based on a true story or not, because you will already be creeped out.
