  • Jonathan Majors Would Love for Robert Downey Jr. to Reprise His Role as Iron Man in Avengers 5

Jonathan Majors expressed interest in sharing the screen with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in the forthcoming Marvel film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

The highly anticipated Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially kicks off this week with the Feb. 17 premiere of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The hype surrounding the upcoming film has mounted as fans prepare for Ant-Man’s fated encounter with MCU’s biggest threat to date, Kang the Conqueror. The merciless time-traverser is adeptly portrayed by Jonathan Majors. After receiving a preview of the character during Loki — which showcased a variant version of He Who Remains in the season 1 finale — fans have been eager for the supervillain’s return.

Ahead of the Phase 5 debut, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been positioned as a critical point within the ever-expanding franchise. And according to Marvel Studios’ President and long-time MCU producer Kevin Feige, it’s the most important Marvel film since Endgame. As Quantumania prepares to set the tone going forward, Majors recently spoke to Lifehacker Australia about the forthcoming Avengers film, which is planned for the final phase of the Multiverse Saga. In the exclusive, he expressed the desire to share the screen with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man — the legendary hero who kicked off MCU’s Phase 1 — in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“This is like a Robert Downey Jr. day, he just keeps popping in [to my head]. Like, I know he’s an OG. I mean, he’s one of the originals. I’m just such a huge fan of him as an actor. I think what he did with Iron Man was such a gift to the culture at large. I would love to be across from him on screen to see how our philosophies, acting-wise and character-wise, just personally, match up.”

Although Downey exited the Marvel franchise in the climatic Phase Three film Avengers: Endgame, the introduction of Kang and the multiverse opens up endless possibilities for the return of Iron Man to the big screen.

“You know, I find him to be such a fascinating artist, which is why Iron Man is so fascinating. His portrayal of Iron Man is so fascinating, and he represents a very clear world view and energy of the Avengers. And I think Kang represents a different era. It’d be really interesting to see those two kind of come together and have a bit of conversation.”

Jonathan Majors has had some big shoes to fill as Marvel’s newest big bad for the Multiverse Saga. Previously released clips from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania already showcases a chilling and compelling performance from Majors as He Who Remains. Although this is Majors’ first principal role as the transtemporal being, Kang the Conqueror is already shaping to be a formidable foe. In his Lifehacker Australia interview, Majors mentions how the role has further developed his artistry as an actor.

“I mean, I’m a franchise player. Kang is a very privileged place to be in with a great deal of responsibility. And because of that, I have the opportunity to really stretch and grow my artistry, selfishly, and contribute that and give that to audiences and to the rest of my teammates.”

When asked about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Majors addressed excitement for the development of his Marvel character within the franchise.

“So Kang Dynasty – I can’t even think about it because I’m so excited about [Quantumania] – but Kang Dynasty feels to me that it has the potential to grow the mythology of Kang, to grow the curiosity of Kang that much more, which is extremely exciting.”

Although details for Kang Dynasty are scarce, it has been confirmed that Daniel Destin Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing the project with an anticipated release in 2025.
