The Challenge Contestants Threaten Lawsuit Over Alleged Injuries

Summary

  • Squid Game: The Challenge contestants sue production company for alleged injuries sustained during filming.
  • CEO of Express Solicitors expresses disappointment in alleged negligence of contestants’ well-being.
  • Netflix and co-producer Studio Lambert deny lawsuit and prioritize safety of contestants.

Squid Game: The Challenge, a thrilling game show based on the South Korean Netflix series, has been hit with controversy after some of the contestants decided to sue the production company for injuries allegedly sustained during filming (via Deadline).

Created and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game centers on a group of 456 players in financial trouble, all competing in deadly children’s games to win a grand prize of $4.56 million. The series stars Jung Ho-yeon, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Yoo-mi, Wi Ha-joon, and Park Hae-soo. The original show garnered 1.65 billion hours viewed for the first 28 days and currently stands as the number-one show on Netflix. Squid Game: The Challenge follows a similar premise in which 456 contestants must compete for a cash prize of $4.56 million. However, Netflix is not the first to produce a high-stakes Squid Game. Two years ago, YouTube celebrity and philanthropist Mr.Beast hosted a similar competition with a grand prize of $456,000.

In a recent report, two unnamed contestants represented by a British personal injury law firm, Express Solicitors, claimed that they were subject to hypothermia and nerve damage during the shooting of ‘Red Light, Green Light.’ The game was filmed during a brief period of cold weather at Cardington Studios in Bedford, U.K.

The CEO of Express Solicitors, Daniel Slade, has communicated disappointment for the alleged negligence of contestants’ wellbeing from studios.

We recognize people may see this as a classic David and Goliath battle with the company and its production partners. Contestants thought they were taking part in something fun and those injured did not expect to suffer as they did. Now they have been left with injuries after spending time being stuck in painful stress positions in cold temperatures.

However, on behalf of Netflix and co-producer Studio Lambert, a spokesperson has stated that no lawsuit has been filed and that they take the safety of their contestants “extremely seriously.” So far, only three players have been confirmed to have received medical attention due to the games.
