Summary

  • The Nun II is set to fully connect the entire universe of The Conjuring franchise, creating a cohesive and interlinked story for fans.
  • Director James Wan hopes to bring the Nun’s story full circle and tie it back into The Conjuring.
  • Actress Taissa Farmiga reveals that The Nun II will bring together characters from the entire Conjuring universe, further connecting the various films and storylines.

While James Wan awaits for the release of the long.awaited sequel to Aquaman later this year, there’s one other project connected to his prior work coming up next. Horror sequel The Nun II is the ninth installment within The Conjuring franchise and a project that’s looking to fully connect the whole universe. The popular horror saga started back in 2013 when James Wan decided to tell the story behind two of the most famous names in the world of the supernatural, Lorraine and Ed Warren, a couple of investigators of the paranormal. The creator of SAW would never have imagined he had another gold mind on his hands, delivering another box office smash that would evolve to become one of the most influential sagas from the last few decades.

As the world of The Conjuring keeps expanding, fans wonder if the stories will still share a deep connection or will they all just be independent chapters taking characters or references from previous projects. Since the franchise it’s celebrating its 10-year anniversary, a special feature from The Nun II has now surfaced online, and finds Wan discussing his hopes for the future of the saga:

“It would be great to eventually bring it back full circle — bring the Nun’s story and tie it back into The Conjuring. We’ve created this universe that has such a huge fan base. The demon nun really captured the zeitgeist.”

Taissa Farmiga, for her part, teases how The Nun II works as connective story for the entire universe:

“It really starts to connect characters from the Conjuring universe and bring them together.”

How The Conjuring Built an MCU-Like Franchise

Warner Bros. Pictures

It all started when Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s Lorraine and Ed Warren were introduced in the first installment of The Conjuring, which actually opens with another famous investigatory marriage case that would become more relevant later on. In that first film, the Warrens help the Perron family, who begin to experience supernatural occurrences at their old home in Rhode Island.

In 2014 Annabelle was released, returning to that other case with which the first installment began. That same year The Conjuring 2 was also released, with the couple again assisting a desperate family, discovering that the being behind this case was none other than the demon Valak, who would later tell his own story in The Nun and The Nun II, which both take place many years before the original story.

In 2017, it was Annabelle who told her origin story in a prequel, which would later lead to a film that explains her arrival in the hands of the Warrens in Annabelle Comes Home, released in 2019. Moving into 2021, Lorraine and Ed witness a famous case about a man who is accused of various murders, of which he does not remember, as he claims he has been possessed.

Soon, the Warrens will return with a fourth film alongside the universe expanding with an original series for Max, as The Conjuring continues to grow its own MCU-style shared universe.

The Nun II is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on September 8, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
