Release Date, Plot, & Cast

When Special Ops: Lioness first premiered in 2023, it quickly carved out a niche for itself as one of the most gripping espionage dramas on television. Blending heart-pounding covert missions with deeply human character arcs, the series stood out in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding television empire. By the time its second season aired in 2024, the show had cemented its reputation as a fan favorite, praised for both its cinematic intensity and nuanced performances led by Zoe Saldaña and Jill Wagner. Now, with Paramount+ officially greenlighting a third season on August 15, 2025, fans are over the moon that the series is officially preparing for its third chapter.

Renewal of the series had long been anticipated, especially given that Saldaña initially signed on for three seasons. Still, the official confirmation has sent waves of excitement across fan communities with the prospect of Season 3 opening the door to new missions, fresh character dynamics, and a continuation of the high-stakes storytelling that has defined the series so far. For Sheridan and his powerhouse cast, the challenge now lies in matching the intensity of its first two seasons and delivering the type of excitement that keeps viewers glued to the edges of their seats.

What Is ‘Special Ops: Lioness’ About?

Special Ops: Lioness is an original Paramount+ series created by Taylor Sheridan. Inspired by the 2003 U.S. military strategy “Team Lioness” conducted by the CIA, the story concerns program leader Joe McNamara (Saldaña), who oversees undercover female agents sent into battle to avoid search and seizures. When said female agents enter combat, they are cited for violating the Combat Exclusion Policy and stripped of their veteran benefits.

Season 1 focuses on Joe launching the program, recruiting Lionesses to execute the mission, and targeting a terrorist backer named Asmar Ali Amrohi. Joe’s team includes Captain Josephina Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez), Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), Bobby (Jill Wagner), Tucker (LaMonica Garrett), Two Cups (James Jordan), and other Quick Response Force (QRF) members. The conflict escalates when Cruz becomes romantically involved with Asmar’s daughter, Aaliyah (Stephanie Nur).

Meanwhile, Joe must suss out the shady CIA ops and defectors, and deal with her superiors, including CIA supervisor Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman), Kaitlyn’s boss and CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly), U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mills (Morgan Freeman), and others. As Joe conducts the program abroad, her attention diverts from her cancer surgeon husband, Neal (Dave Annable), and their daughter, Kate (Hannah Love Lanier).

‘Special Ops: Lioness’ Season 3 Has Been a Long Time Coming

The confirmation of Special Ops: Lioness Season 3 finally arrived a few days ago, ending months of speculation and solidifying Paramount+’s faith in the Sheridan-helmed thriller. Before the announcement, industry watchers expressed their confidence that the series would return, given Saldaña’s contractual obligation. Yet, others were still apprehensive, given that many shows are subject to cancellations despite their popularity.

A release date for Season 3 has not been confirmed at the time of writing. However, this has not prevented viewers from speculating. Season 2 was filmed between May and August 2024, hitting screens just two months later in October. Production for Season 3 is reported to commence in October 2025, meaning that, if the formula of the previous season is followed, a premiere is likely in late 2025 or early 2026. Production could even move to Sheridan’s sprawling studio in Texas, giving the show a larger space for its wild, globe-trotting missions.

Unanswered questions still remain, especially with regard to the plot of the new season. However, one thing that is for certain is that Saldaña’s character, Joe McNamara, will continue her high-stakes undercover operations. The new season is also set to explore new threats and personal challenges for McNamara. Aligning the A-list talent in the Special Ops: Lioness cast will undoubtedly require careful planning, but the green light still signals Paramount’s confidence. Though details remain scarce, patterns suggest that Lioness is quietly gearing up for yet another explosive season.

Who Will Be Back for ‘Special Ops: Lioness’ Season 3?

Although casting news for Season 3 remains under wraps, several names are pegged to return for the show’s third season. Chief among them, quite obviously, is Zoe Saldaña herself, whose three-season contract all but guarantees her return as CIA station chief Joe McNamara. Alongside her, Laysla De Oliveira is expected to reprise her role as Cruz Manuelos, whose emotional arc has been central to the narrative since its inception. Jill Wagner is also expected to make a return.

The second season of Special Ops: Lioness expanded the cast significantly, bringing back heavyweights such as Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Kelly, alongside Genesis Rodriguez, Dave Annable, LaMonica Garrett, and Thad Luckinbill. Given the show’s balance between its core CIA operatives and its Lioness recruits, it seems likely that most of these names will make a return, while a few fresh additions will also be added in to reflect new missions or geopolitical challenges.

Behind the scenes, Sheridan still continues to pull the strings, supported by an executive producing team that includes Saldaña and Kidman themselves. This consistent leadership suggests that Season 3 will preserve the dynamic, character-driven focus that has given the series its reputation. While casting surprises are always possible, the formula of blending established Hollywood talent with rising stars has worked thus far, and there is no reason to think Sheridan will venture in a different direction.

With Season 3 officially on the books, one thing remains certain: Special Ops: Lioness stands poised to return with all the tension, moral complexity, and adrenaline-fueled storytelling that have made the series a fan favorite. As for the finer details, only time will reveal.
