Tim Anderson’s ban reduced to 5 games for fighting Guardians’ Ramirez

Shortstop Tim Anderson’s six-game suspension was reduced to five contests for his part in the Aug. 6 brawl between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians, MLB announced Thursday.

Anderson will serve the five-game ban starting Friday when the White Sox start a series against the Colorado Rockies. The 30-year-old saved himself around $77,000 with his appeal.

“This has been an incredibly disappointing season for me personally and for our team” Anderson said Thursday in a statement on Instagram. “I will not get into the things that were said to me by Cleveland players both Friday night and Saturday, but those comments do not excuse my language or conduct, and I take full responsibility for my emotions getting the better of me.”

Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez, who exchanged punches with Anderson, also had his suspension reduced from three games to two. He served his punishment last weekend during a series versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ramirez said after the fight that Anderson was disrespecting the game.

“The Cleveland players are free to say whatever they want, but I will just say that no one has more respect for the game of baseball than me,” Anderson added.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, manager Terry Francona, and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh each earned one-game bans for the incident, as did White Sox skipper Pedro Grifol. All of those suspensions have been served.
