‘Stranger Things’ Star Makes Shocking Admission About Series Finale

November 26 will see the release of the first four episodes of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. The Netflix fantasy-horror hit will then release three episodes on Christmas Day, and the highly-anticipated finale on New Year’s Eve. Plot details have stayed a secret since production wrapped, but Netflix and creators Matt and Ross Duffer have taken their intention to keep everyone in the dark to the next level. As shared by young star Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers on the show, not even the cast has seen the series finale — they’ll watch with the rest of us, on the day of the premiere.

Speaking with People magazine, Schnapp teased an emotional conclusion to Stranger Things, saying he’s “just as excited as” the fans. Even though he hasn’t seen the final episode, he’s seen enough to say things get “more emotional” as the show comes to an end:

“The stakes just keep getting higher and higher, and the show — you are not ready. I just watched 5 and 6, and I was sobbing. It’s so good. And then the finale, they’re not going to show any of us, so I won’t see it until the world sees it, and I’m just as excited as you guys are.”

Growing Up in the Upside Down

For millions of fans, it’ll be bittersweet to see the opening credits for the Stranger Things finale on New Year’s Eve. It’s been a nearly ten-year journey alongside the Hawkins gang, who’ve grown from children into young adults. Viewers face an emotional farewell, but for the stars of the show, it’s much more.

Schnapp talked to Variety recently, and described the experience of reading the final season scripts, and the ensuing table reads beside the co-stars who turned into real friends: “I can only imagine how that’s going to feel on screen, with scoring and real faces and not just words on a page, but it hit a lot of us. It felt like they were writing the end of our real people’s lives — it went beyond just the screenplay. I can’t spoil it, but like, I always connect my life to some of the beats that they wrote in the script.” He also shared details of his last day on set, and having to say goodbye to Winona Ryder, who plays Will’s mother on the show:

“I went to every single person on that call sheet’s last day. I did not want to say goodbye to anybody. Every single goodbye hit me so much more than I expected. Like, I was at Winona’s last day, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is a work goodbye, we’ll see each other soon.’ And then I was in her trailer, and I was like, ‘No! You can’t leave!’ I was holding on to her, just sobbing.

“I didn’t want to say goodbye. I did not expect it to hit me so hard. I realized after that how important that relationship was to me. She really was a second mother to me growing up, and not having this show to keep us together was really hard, especially with her, because she’s hard to keep track of. I’m not always seeing Winona Ryder. So it was a hard goodbye.”
