Summary

  • Andre Braugher’s role as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine endeared him to many fans.
  • A compilation video of Braugher’s best moments as Captain Holt was shared on X, showcasing his ability to play a comical role with complete seriousness.
  • Tributes to Braugher, including heartfelt messages from his co-stars Terry Crews and Joe Lo Truglio, highlighted his incredible talent and the impact he had on those who knew him.

The sad news of Andre Braugher’s death has seen a wave of tributes being shared on social media, and one of the most dominant images to feature in many of these are of the actor’s role as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Despite Braugher’s career spanning many roles, from his movie debut in the 1989 movie Glory, to his more dramatic police procedural role in Homicide: Life on the Street, the actor’s appearance in over 150 episodes of Fox and NBC’s comedy series is one that endeared him to many fans.

For that reason alone, a compilation video of some of Braugher’s best moments as Captain Holt was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @vidsthatgohard. Clocking in at just under 10 minutes long, the video is a terrific reminder of the actor’s extraordinary ability to play a comical role with complete seriousness, or, for some, a very good reason to become acquainted with the series, which is currently available to stream on Netflix. Check out the video below.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine debuted on Fox in September 2013, introducing the world to the fictional officers of the New York Police Department who are adjusting to their new commanding officer, Braugher’s Holt. The series, co-starring Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews and Melissa Fumero among others, was originally canceled by Fox after its fifth season, but was picked up by NBC, who delivered three further seasons until the show ended in 2021 after a total of 153 episodes.

As well as winning numerous awards, the series holds a strong 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with four of its eight seasons retaining a 100% approval rate. Much of that acclaim comes down to the interplay between Sandberg’s goofy detective Jake Peralta and the steely, glum demeanor of Braugher’s Captain Holt, something that is on display in abundance in the compilation video.

Andre Braugher Remembered by Brooklyn Nine-Nine Stars

NBC

As expected, tributes to Braugher were quick in coming following the announcement of his death, and his Brooklyn Nine-Nine costar Terry Crews was one of the first to share his sadness at the loss of the great actor and friend. Crews wrote:

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man.”

Joe Lo Truglio also shared a heartfelt post on his own Instagram account, noting that there are “many wonderful stories” to be told but for now the only important thing was to send love to the actor’s family. He wrote:

“So many wonderful stories will be told about Andre but for now, all my love goes to his wife Ami and his three boys, who he loved very much and flew back every weekend from the show to be with. We all know how powerful an actor he was, but even more, Andre knew exactly well his most important role and was deeply proud of it. He spoke often about his sons, and knew how lucky he was to have Ami. I’m grateful to them for allowing us to share eight years with him. He was committed and passionate about the things he loved. And that voice. It laid anchor to the roughest of dialogue. What you probably don’t know is that Andre could sing too, and did often at lunch, belting bassy vocals from his dressing room to whatever new music he found. At first, it was odd because well…*it was Andre Braugher crooning at full volume from behind closed doors*…but then very quickly it made all the sense in the world because the man was so full of song and that’s why the world took notice. I miss him so much already. What an honor to work with a man who knew what it was really all about. I feel blessed and thankful. Miss you Capt Holt. Love, Porkchop.”
