The Mysterious Benedict Society Gets Renewed for Season 2 at Disney+

Disney’s The Mysterious Benedict Society‘s success is no mystery as the series will be coming back to Disney+ for a season 2. The series began on June 25 and recently wrapped up its first season in August.

Based on the best-selling young-adult book series by Trenton Lee Stewart, The Mysterious Benedict Society follows the adventures of four fearless orphans who are recruited by a mysterious, intelligent benefactor, Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale). In the first season, the team is assembled in order to foil the threatening “emergency” created by Mr. Benedict’s twin brother, Dr. L.D. Curtain (also Hale). The team must now embark on a wild adventure in order to stop Curtain’s plan that now has worldwide implications.

In addition to Hale, the cast includes Kristen Schaal, MaameYaa Boafo, Ryan Hurst, Gia Sandhu, Seth B. Carr, Emmy DeOliveira, Mystic Inscho and Marta Kessler. The series is produced by 20th television along with in association with Halcyon Studios a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Company.

Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are creators/writers/executive producers of the series with James Bobin and Deepak Nayar serving as additional executive producers. Other executive producers include Karen Kehela Sherwood, Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Matt Loze, David Ellender, and Jamie Tarses. Hay, Manfredi, Slavkin and Swimmer shared a statement detailing their excitement to keep working on the show.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our journey into Trenton Lee Stewart’s witty, warm and wonderful world in a second season of The Mysterious Benedict Society,” The producers said. “This has already been such a special experience, thanks to our remarkable cast and collaborators. The belief that 20th Television and Disney+ have shown in our show and their commitment to its values of kindness, empathy and the celebration of different ways of being make this all very much a joy.”

The announcement came via a tweet and Instagram post shared by Tony Hale. The video began as a special announcement for all society members. Hale appears in the video, explaining a riddle that he said was shared with him via Disney. At the end of the riddle, a graphic appeared that revealed Season 2 of The Mysterious Benedict Society is coming. The caption of the video from Hale says,” Math isn’t my forte but…”

The first season of this series received strong reviews from both critics and audiences when it started streaming. It was supposed to debut earlier, but was delayed as filming was pushed due to the pandemic. Hale spoke to Variety about his experience shooting this series amidst the pandemic.

“The whole process was just an absolute joy. We shot it in Vancouver. This was [during] some pretty heightened months of COVID – August through January,” Hale said. “The Vancouver crew was so on top of it, and so fantastic. And because of COVID I wasn’t able to come home for five months. I used to kind of poo-poo technology, but man, after that, I’m so grateful for FaceTime and just to stay connected with my family and my wife and my daughter.”

There is no expected release date yet for Season 2, but production is expected to begin in 2022. On Disney+ you can find the first season streaming.
