Viewers looking forward to the previously announced Prince
documentary have a lot of reason to be devastated following the latest news. The documentary was highly anticipated, with several new pieces of alleged information coming to light in the nine-hour series. Numerous allegations of abuse from former romantic partners of the late pop icon, both physical and emotional, were set to be featured. However, despite the buzz surrounding the venture, Netflix
has officially squashed any hope for the documentary to air, instead announcing an entirely new direction for Prince content.
According to Variety, Netflix is not only shelving the Ezra Edelman doc, but it announced plans to partner with Prince’s estate, releasing new content. Prince’s archive will reportedly be opened up for the world’s consumption, putting eyes on the previously unseen work of the artist. The singer’s estate was openly opposed to the release of Edelman’s documentary, previously referring to it with a slew of negative terms, highlighting the “sensationalized” inaccuracies of the content. Netflix provided a statement to the Minnesota Star Tribune regarding the streamer’s new direction for The Purple Rain singer’s content stating:
The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.
The documentary was under the guidance of the award-winning director of O.J.: Made In America. That 2016 documentary won Critic’s Choice Awards and walked away with several Emmy Awards as well. The series shed a 360-degree spotlight on all things OJ Simpson, diving deep into all aspects of the disgraced football star’s life. The Prince documentary followed the same model, tackling topics such as the alleged abandonment of his young wife, following the tragic loss of their child in utero.
Netflix Sparks Outrage After Prince Documentary Cancelation
The scrapping of a highly anticipated six-episode documentary about one of the biggest stars of the music industry is a jarring decision for Netflix. With a multitude of fan backlash following another price hike, coupled with the choice to stop sharing subscription numbers, canceling a fan-favorite project could backfire. The announcement sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning the motive and thought process behind the move.
Besides the tweet featured above, others on X are slamming Netflix for abruptly putting the brakes on Edelman’s groundbreaking project. One user wrote, “Ezra Edelman is a brilliant filmmaker. Such disrespect to all the hard work he put into this film. I hope it leaks.” Another echoed the same sentiment, tweeting, “Please try to publish it some way. Even if it has to be a book, podcast, or some other video thing. Netflix or the Prince Estate both shouldn’t have the ability to control it.” However, not everyone appears ready to condemn Netflix for partnering with Prince’s Estate instead of Edelman, with one user saying, “The choice to cancel a documentary can often reflect broader values in storytelling. Accuracy must always come first to honor the legacy of influential figures like Prince. #StorytellingMatters.”
