It’s been more than 20 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer left the airwaves, but the passage of time didn’t stop Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz from having a sweet moment together online while reminiscing about one of their favorite episodes from the iconic series. Gellar played the titular character of Buffy Summers in the long-running show which aired from 1997-2003, while Boreanaz portrayed Angel, a brooding vampire with a soul who falls in love with her.

Boreanaz, who is currently filming the seventh and final season of SEAL Team for Paramount+, took time out of his shooting schedule to post on Instagram reminiscing about his time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He shared a simple black and white photo that depicts himself and Gellar engaged in a slow dance from the episode titled ‘The Prom,’ with the caption ‘Time stands still. In a moment. #AngelBuffy.’ Check out the photo below:

Gellar commented on the post, saying “My fav episode,” followed by a heart emoji. In turn, David Boreanaz responded to her comment with his own heart emoji. While that was the extent of their reminiscing, it certainly tugged on the heartstrings of Buffy and Angel fans everywhere, who flooded the comments section with their own GIFs and memories of the desolate lovers, with one person saying, “Best chemistry in TV history,” and another commenting, “I can see myself at the age of 16 crying in front of the TV.”

Will There Be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot?

Back in 2018, it was announced that there were plans to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation of fans, with Monica Owusu-Breen attached as showrunner, and Joss Whedon, who created the series, attached as executive producer. Since then, there’s been sporadic updates here and there, but for the most part, the reboot seems to have fallen by the wayside. In a recent interview with Variety, Gellar herself stated that she has no plans to return to the character that made her famous, but rather she believes the torch should be passed to someone else:

“I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of ‘Buffy’ were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”

However, as soon as January 24, 2024, the reboot was given a burst of life from an unlikely source: country music legend Dolly Parton. Parton served as an uncredited producer throughout the entire run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer via her company, Sandollar Productions, which would also go on to produce the spin-off series, Angel. In an interview with Business Insider, Parton offered hope to fans by saying, “They’re still working on that.” Check out her full quote below:

“They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”

While a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains up in the air, fans can still catch Gellar and Boreanaz on Paramount+, where Boreanaz stars in SEAL Team, and Gellar appears in Wolf Pack, which was unfortunately canceled after its first season.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are available to stream on Hulu.
