Wednesday Spinoff About Uncle Fester Now in Development, Netflix Planning Addams Family Franchise

Summary

  • Netflix plans to develop a spinoff centered around Uncle Fester, following the success of the “Wednesday” series.
  • The Uncle Fester spinoff is in early development, with contracts and schedules still needing to be negotiated.
  • Netflix aims to establish a pipeline of Addams Family programs based on the success of “Wednesday.”

Netflix is now planning to build on the huge success of their The Addams Family sequel series, Wednesday, with the development of a spinoff centered on Uncle Fester. As per a report by Bloomberg, the Wednesday spinoff project will follow Uncle Fester, who was introduced in the first season of Wednesday and portrayed by Saturday Night Live alumni Fred Armisen.

“Before production begins on the second season, the company has also started talking about another Addams Family program, one built around Uncle Fester, played on the series by Fred Armisen.”

Of course, as the report points out, as with any television series, there is no guarantee that the Uncle Fester spinoff will happen, but considering the massive success of Wednesday, it makes sense that Netflix will want to build a new franchise off the back of the hit show.

The Uncle Fester series is said to be in very early development at this stage, with the writers still needing to “figure out the story, the company needs to negotiate contracts with talent, and the schedules of the individuals must align.” But, it is likely that the show is high on the priority list for Netflix, who are now “eager to establish a pipeline of Addams Family programs to build off the success of Wednesday,” according to the report.

Wednesday Will Be the Beginning of a New Addams Family Franchise for Netflix

Wednesday

Follows Wednesday Addams’ years as a student, when she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents. Directed by Tim Burton.

The first season of Wednesday has been a major success for the streaming giant, with the Addams Family show quickly entering the zeitgeist thanks to its blend of horror and comedy, and with a particular dance number seeing huge popularity. After premiering last year, Wednesday is now the most popular English language series ever to stream on Netflix, with more than 250million views.

The second series of Wednesday is all set to begin filming in spring 2024, and will build on the first season, which saw the titular Addams Family sibling attending Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago.

The series was met with rave reviews from both audiences and critics alike, who heaped praise on Jenna Ortega in the lead role. The first season of Wednesday received two Golden Globe nominations, for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Ortega, as well as receiving Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Ortega will return as Wednesday Addams in season two, with the actress recently teasing that the show will lean far more into horror and less into romance the second time around.

“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more. Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously.”

The first season of Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix, and it sounds like there is a lot more to come from this iteration of the beloved creepy, kooky family.
