Aaron Carter Was Working on Sitcom Before His Death, Pilot Still Moving Forward

Before his sudden passing at the age of 34, former Disney Channel star Aaron Carter delivered one last acting performance for a comedy series pilot. Called Group, the planned sitcom focuses on group therapy with a push for mental health advocacy. Carter, who played a fictionalized version of himself, is said to have been eager to move forward with the series as a way of confronting his real-life struggles.

The pilot’s writer and director, Brian Farmer, confirmed to TMZ that Carter completed his filming on the pilot episode. He also described Carter as a “kind soul that was a true pleasure to work with,” and was hopeful that future episodes would give the former child star “something positive to work toward.” Though he has sadly passed away, Farmer is moving forward with shopping the series after getting the blessing from Carter’s camp. If the show moves forward, it will be dedicated to the late rapper, actor, and singer.

Other cast members of Group include Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks), Anne Judson-Yager (Bring It On Again), and Mike Starr (Dumb and Dumber). Actress Olive Chiacchia (Shooting Jeremy) also shared the screen with Carter in the pilot by playing his love interest. Following his death, Chiacchia posted some photos and a video from the set remembering her time with Carter and paying tribute.

“I had the pleasure of playing your love interest in Group, and you were truly the most loving, professional, kind and talented performer I’ve worked with,” Chiacchia says in part with her tribute post. “I wish the world saw you the way I do, and saw your side of the story. Everyone knew your struggles, so I share this story in hopes that you will be remembered for your heart and your light. My heart goes out to your family, loved ones, Melanie, and your son. Until I see you on the other side, my friend bananerman. Rest In Peace.”

Aaron Carter Previously Appeared in Disney Channel Shows

Disney Channel

Carter, who first rose to fame before the age of 10 as a successful singer, made his acting debut in 2001. He played himself in an episode of Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel, marking the first of many occasions he would pop up in a show, often as himself. Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff was also among those remembering Carter after his death.

Duff wrote to Carter on Instagram, “I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent… boy did my teeenage self love you deeply.”

It remains to be seen if Group gets picked up to series, but if that doesn’t happen, hopefully Farmer will still release the pilot so fans can see Carter’s final acting role.
