Wonder Man Fan Art Imagines Yahya-Abdul Mateen II as the Marvel Superhero

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s casting in Wonder Man has fans wondering how the actor will appear in the role, and thanks to this fan art, we have an idea.

A Wonder Man series is in development at Disney+, and it’s also been reported that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman, The Matrix Resurrections) will be starring as the titular superhero. That follows the announcement that Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) would be directing the series while Andrew Guest (Hawkeye) would be serving as head writer. Ben Kingsley is also on board to return as Trevor Slattery following prior MCU appearances in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi.

The series is in its early stages, and there are no images of Abdul-Mateen in his Wonder Man outfit. This is where talented digital artists like @Marvelicki on Twitter come into the picture. The artist posted some digital artwork of Abdul-Mateen as Wonder Man, and while it’s not an official image from the series, the art does very well with selling the actor’s casting in the role. You can see the artwork below.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Abdul-Mateen has already made a splash in the DCU with his role as Black Manta in the first Aquaman movie. He reprises the role in the upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The actor also recently appeared in Michael Bay’s action thriller Ambulance with Jake Gyllenhaal following notable roles in other movies like Us, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Candyman, and The Matrix Resurrections. Abdul-Mateen is also known for his acclaimed role in the Watchmen miniseries.

Marvel Comics

The original comic book version of Wonder Man was created by Stan Lee along with artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, first appearing in a 1964 issue of The Avengers. Originally introduced as a villain, Wonder Man, real name Simon Williams, would later join the Avengers after initially battling the superhero group. The ion-powered superhero has superhuman strength and durability, gaining his powers from chemical and radiation treatments by Baron Zemo. Wonder Man has never been featured in an official live-action adaptation, though Nathan Fillion recently voiced an animated version in Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K. series.

In other Wonder Man news, there have been rumors that Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk is also in talks for a special role in the series that would bring him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There isn’t any fan art of that just yet, but given his popularity, the rumors have many of his fans excited. Odenkirk has not publicly confirmed nor denied the rumors, though word is he’s up for the role of the Simon Williams’ manager.

Wonder Man doesn’t have a release date at this time.
