Romulus Sets Digital & Physical Release Dates

To say that expectations were high for Fede Álvarez‘s Alien: Romulus would be an understatement. As the first film in the franchise in seven years, everyone was looking forward to seeing how the director of 2013’s Evil Dead would put his own spin on the series, and the results did not disappoint. It would go on to earn more than $340 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. Fans who might have missed it in theaters won’t have to wait long to see it at home, though, as release dates have been revealed for Romulus’ digital and physical media debuts.

Per 20th Century Studios (via Screen Rant), Alien: Romulus will make its way to digital on October 15 via Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. It will be available as a standalone purchase, but fans looking for an extra bit of context can also buy it in a two-movie bundle along with Alien in 4K UHD, HD and SD formats. Starring Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, Alien: Romulus follows three pairs of siblings as they look to scavenge a derelict space station, only to come face-to-face with the most terrifying threat in the universe.

In addition to its digital debut, Alien: Romulus will get a physical media release on December 3 in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD formats, with the 4K UHD version also available in a collectible limited edition SteelBook with custom artwork and packaging (seen below). Bonus features are plenty, too, and include alternate scenes, making-of features, and a conversation between Ridley Scott and Álvarez. Check out the full list of additional goodies, as well as the packaging for the SteelBook edition below.

Will Alien: Romulus Get a Sequel?

With the overwhelming critical and commercial success of Alien: Romulus, one would think that Álvarez would return to the franchise to helm either a direct sequel, or at least another entry taking place elsewhere in the timeline. That could happen, but don’t expect it anytime soon, as the director told The Hollywood Reporter that although he has ideas on how the story could continue, he’s in no hurry to rush another film into production.

“We’ll wait to see what people think and if people ask for it. My philosophy is that you should never make [a sequel] in two years. You’ve got to get away. You’ve got to get the audience to really want it. If you think about Alien and Aliens, there’s seven years between them. But we definitely have ideas about where it should go.”

For now, fans will have to be content with the digital and physical media release of Alien: Romulus, but we’ll have more news on the billion-dollar franchise as it becomes available.
