Actor Anthony Macauley probably has a wild story, one with plenty of imaginative leaps, to credit his Marvel days. He went on to narrate traumatic first-time stunt experiences on The Tonight Show, and really, “could have gone wrong” would be a severe understatement.

The setup was much too dramatic for him to be Jacked six stories high by some construction crane; he sat there all strapped up, being ready to flip upside down for the camera. The words from the very thick throat lay heavy on the ear: “So they picked me up, I flip over, and I’m looking at the ground.” The do-or-die moment came next. “They dropped me.” All hell broke loose from there: Anthony screamed “Ah! Ah! Ah!” with so much conviction that after this one single take, the director yelled, “Cut! Alright, let’s get the stuntman!”
The cut clip on The Tonight Show Instagram caused quite a stir when it was revealed. One user ridiculously demanded that Marvel release the unseen footage: “@marvel @disneyplus please find this footage and release it.” Another remarked that it is quite rare for an actor to give a shoutout to his stunt crew, praising Mackie in the process: “Good man…he gave credit.”
Mackie, who praised Warren, saying he’s “the best in the business,” really brought forth a good question: After hearing this story, you realize why the likes of Warren are so urgently needed. Behind-the-scenes chaos never gets this funny or honest at large budgets.
Some fans felt inclined to link it back to the actor’s previous works. Someone half-joked with the allusion to his infamous freak-out in 8 Mile: “Second time he’s been this freaked out… ‘8 miles’ ago was the first, iykyk.”
Until then, it will remain an unsolved mystery if Marvel ever gets around to releasing that footage. Right now, though, Mackie’s tale is an embarrassing reminder that even heroes wear backup.
In the background, these are the stuntmen and women, and this brilliant story of Mackie really tells how the actors put their trust into these men and women. From six-story drops to crazy-fast chases and every so often, they make it all look so easy. The moment something supernatural happens? They’re saving the stars, not the stars screaming for deliverance.

So, next time you enjoy a Marvel movie, remember that flawless shots of action probably were tried and failed a couple of times. If you are lucky enough, you might even get a glimpse of the bloopers. Until then, the failed Mackie flip will have to do.
