Spawn Cinematic Universe Being Planned by Todd McFarlane

Development on the long-gestating Spawn reboot finally took a major step forward earlier this week, but while just making one movie has taken this long, comic book icon and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is already thinking ahead. Speaking with CBR.com, McFarlane revealed that he already has his sights set on a Spawn Cinematic Universe. A cinematic universe that could feature as many as 300 characters.

“Image Comics and the Spawn comic book are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. So, I’ve got well over 300 characters in my universe. Again, they’re not all equal to Spawn, but they exist. Do I think there’s a way to branch out from Spawn into the Spawn Universe? Yes.”

Thanks to the MCU, cinematic universes are now all the rage, with every franchise from Netflix to Sonic the Hedgehog trying to find ways to create to build their own. McFarlane continued, stating that while the upcoming Spawn movie will maintain focus on the title character, he does already have a plan for expansion.

“The expansion has begun with my characters and is there a natural progression that could go on into Hollywood, the answer is yes… as long as we can launch Spawn out of the gate to start with.”

Simply launching Spawn “out the gate” has proven to be a monumental task so far, with McFarlane working hard to get the Spawn reboot off the ground since as far back as 2007. Created by McFarlane in the early 90s, Spawn begins life as an assassin named Albert Francis Simmons before being murdered and making a deal to become a Hellspawn. While he begins by doing Hell’s bidding, Spawn soon finds a new purpose in stopping evil, battling street gangs and organized crime as an antihero. The character has been adapted for the screen before, in the much-maligned 1997 effort starring Michael Jai White.

Spawn Recently Added Joker & Captain America: New World Order Writers

New Line Cinema

After a whole lot of waiting, it finally looks like McFarlane’s Spawn reboot might actually get made, with the project tapping Joker co-writer Scott Silver, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: New World Order’s Malcolm Spellman, and newcomer Matthew Mixon to write the script for the comic book movie project.

Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx remains on board to play the titular avenging hellspawn, with the actor recently revealing details of what his other-worldly superhero suit will look like when it, at last, comes to life on the silver screen.

“I’ve seen a lot of concepts. Because Todd, what he does it, every single day he’s doodling and he’s fixing and he’s doing some things that, to me, I think is gonna be like way out when you see it,” Foxx revealed. “And how he crafts that cape and how that cape becomes almost like – I’ll say this – as big as the screen that you’re watching.”

Avengers: Endgame star Jeremy Renner is also reportedly attached, with the Marvel actor rumored to be playing a detective. Producer Jason Blum is also on board.

After all this time, here’s hoping that the Spawn reboot will be worth the wait.
