The Last Airbender Animated Movie Gets Official Release Date From Paramount

Fans have patiently waited for more animated content from the Avatar: The Last Airbender team for years. The initial series, which ran on Nickelodeon from 2005-2008, was a massive success and is widely regarded as one of the best television shows ever created. A spinoff, titled The Legend of Korra, premiered in 2012 and ran for four seasons, receiving similar acclaim from critics and audiences.

Now, the team behind both shows is returning to make a feature film designed for the theater, with Paramount recently revealing the release date for the first of three planned movies. According to a report from Variety, the untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender movie will make its way to theaters on Oct. 10, 2025. Unfortunately, audiences are in for a bit of a wait as work has only just begun on the upcoming film, but fans can’t wait to return to the world created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

During the last San Diego Comic-Con, Janet Varney, who voiced Korra in her titular series, officially announced Team Avatar would return for the first movie. This means fans should see more of Avatar Aang and his friends, Sokka, Katara, and Toph, who led the initial series. Plot details surrounding the film are still scarce, though audiences should expect the peak of animated storytelling if the previous projects are any indication.

Avatar Studios is Planning Big Things Within Their Universe

Nickelodeon Animation Studios

Avatar: The Last Airbender had some of the best world-building in any television series, as each season expanded the previously introduced lore. The varying nations and their ability to bend earth, water, fire, and air proved to be a universe worth exploring and has been underutilized since 2014.

Now, Avatar Studios has been established, working with Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation to continue expanding the beloved universe. Lauren Montgomery is helming the upcoming film, and she has previous experience with Avatar and was a supervising producer on The Legend of Korra starting in Season 2.

Luckily, the untitled Last Airbender movie has the same creative talent as the original. In 2010, a live-action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan was released following the events of the show’s first season. Unfortunately, the film is regarded as one of the worst adaptions ever created, with a stunning 5% critic score and 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Creators DiMartino and Konietzko are looking to find more success with their first venture into feature films in the Avatar universe, and fans can’t wait to see what Aang has been up to since the series finale in 2008.
