American Gods Canceled at Starz After Three Seasons

Starz is pulling the plug on American Gods after three seasons. Just over a week after the third season aired its finale on the network, Starz has confirmed that the acclaimed series will not be returning for a fourth season. Season 3 ended in such a way that sets up for a potential season 4 with more of the story yet to adapt from the original Neil Gaiman novel, but now fans will have to accept that there may not be a resolution to what happened.

“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” a rep for Starz told Deadline in a statement.

Slipping ratings likely played the biggest role in American Gods getting axed, but fans shouldn’t give up hope for proper closure just yet. There is reportedly some chatter behind the scenes at Starz that the network could allow for the cast and crew to properly wrap up the story with a limited series or a movie adaptation. As we’ve seen with other social media campaigns like #SaveLucifer and #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, the decision will likely be determined by just how badly the fans want it.

One person that’s already gotten in on the mission to save American Gods is Ricky Whittle, who plays the lead role of Shadow Moon on the show. Using the hashtag #letsfinishthis, Whittle posted an image on Twitter along with a thank you note addressed to the American God fans.

“This has been an amazing journey thus far and I am so grateful to my fellow cast and crew who have worked so hard on this award winning show,” Whittle writes. “We have the best fans around the world and thank each of you for your passion and support, so know that Neil Gaiman, Fremantle, myself and the cast are still committed to completing Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed story. -Believe.”

Based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, American Gods starred Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Orlando Jones, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Crispin Glover, Kahyun Kim, Omid Abtahi, Mousa Kraish, and Pablo Schreiber.

Ongoing issues behind the scenes certainly didn’t help matters. American Gods was developed for first television by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, debuting on Starz in 2017. The pair left during season 2 with Jesse Alexander and Gaiman taking the reins of the problematic production. Several major cast members like Schreiber, Kraish, and Jones did not return for the third season, another big blow for the show.

Meanwhile, another one of Gaiman’s famous literary works is getting a new small-screen adaptation as well. The author is currently working on an adaptation of The Sandman at Netflix with a cast that includes Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer. This follows a series based on Good Omens that premiered on Amazon Prime in 2019.

If you want to see American Gods get a limited series or even just a movie to properly end the series, your best bet is to get on social media and plead your case directly to Starz. This news comes to us from Deadline.
