Dark Side of Football Trailer Highlights the American Sport’s Most Tragic Stories

Vice TV has released the trailer for Dark Side of Football, a spinoff of the pro wrestling documentary series Dark Side of the Ring. Chronicling the darkest real-life stories to come from the football world, oftentimes off the football field, the new documentary series explores the tension between America’s undying love of the game, and its ability to corrupt and damage those who live and die for it. You can watch the trailer below.

“You don’t ever let anybody punk you, this is a game of respect,” one personality says in the trailer. Another speaks about the “stabbings, fightings, and beatings” that’s been associated with the sport, that’s left him scared for his life. At this time, it’s unclear exactly which stories will be discussed in the spinoff’s freshman season, but the brief trailer does give fans an idea of the tone and what to expect from the show.

It’s no shock to see the network expanding the Dark Side franchise as a result of Dark Side of the Ring getting to be so popular. The parent series is the network’s No. 1 show of all time, and it will be back for a supersized third season to keep the acclaimed series going. For the sports fans not quite so interested in the inner workings of the pro wrestling business, something like Dark Side of Football takes the same concept and applies it to another area that needs to have a spotlight brought to it.

Last fall, it had also been announced that Vice TV was developing another spinoff called Dark Side of the ’90s. The idea behind this show swaps out pro wrestling or football with some of the most well-known, darkest stories from the decade. Each episode of that series will look at the most captivating pop-culture moments, trends, and personalities of the 90s featuring interviews with people who studied the time period. Though Dark Side of the Ring and Dark Side of Football have new trailers, the ’90s incarnation hasn’t yet gotten one.

“We are thrilled to expand the Dark Side franchise and take a harder look at the untold stories of two our our favorite cultural touchstones: football and ’90s nostalgia,” Morgan Hertzan, EVP and General Manager of Vice TV, said in a statement at the time. “Both topics are rich with controversial characters, subjects, and events that are ripe for investigation. Dark Side of the Ring beautifully lifts the veil on the most gripping stories in wrestling, and I cannot wait for audiences to see what we uncover in our next iterations.”

Dark Side of Football will premiere on Vice TV on May 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. If you want to check out more of Dark Side of the Ring, that show will also return with its third season on May 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The status of the other spinoff, Dark Side of the ’90s, is unclear with no new word on when that show will premiere. The new trailer for Dark Side of Football comes to us from Vice TV.
