Jeopardy! Contestant Matt Amodio’s Winning Streak Ends After 38 Consecutive Games

The latest big winning streak on Jeopardy! has come to an end. After 38 consecutive games, Matt Amodio saw his run conclude on Monday night’s episode, ultimately putting him just behind Ken Jennings for having the most consecutive wins in the game show’s history. Famously, Jennings had a 74-game winning streak, and many Jeopardy! viewers had grown very invested in Amodio’s streak to see just how far he would go. All in all, Amodio banked 1,299 correct clues with total cash winnings of $1,518,601.

On Monday’s episode, Matt Amodio wound up in third place. He fell behind to Jonathan Fisher, an actor from Florida, along with Jessica Stephens, a statistical research assistant from Tennessee. Fisher won a total of $29,200 with Stephens netting $28,799. It wasn’t close for Amodio this time, who bowed out with $5,600. Even so, host Mayim Bialik and the Jeopardy! audience gave praise to Amodio for his very impressive winning streak.

“Sad, but I’m also thinking back to all the good times that I’ve had along the way. There’s plenty of happiness too,” Amodio said after the show, addressing how the loss made him feel. “I always wanted to be a Jeopardy! champion, and I accomplished that… l will know going into every bar trivia game that I play that I’m going to come in with a little intimidation factor. But also, I just like the badge that it represents. As somebody who prioritizes knowledge and knowing things, this is really a good one to have following me everywhere.”

Viewers will get the chance to see Matt Amodio compete again. He will take part in the next Tournament of Champions where he will have another shot at scoring another big Jeopardy! victory. Meanwhile, he’s drawn some praise from Ken Jennings, as though Amodio didn’t top Ken’s record, his run was still very impressive. As Jennings said on Jeopardy.com, “Matt is just such a fantastic player. The one thing I admire more than anything else on Jeopardy! is consistency. It’s so hard to come out and win day after day and week after week.”

Mayim Bialik, who’s been serving as interim host since Sept. 20, also said, “He was unbelievable, and also really, really fun to watch. I don’t think that I’ve experienced in all the time that I’ve been here anything like that, with the pace and intensity that he was able to keep up.”

It was previously reported that Bialik and Ken Jennings would be the only two guest hosts to serve on Jeopardy! for the rest of the year. At this time, a permanent host of the show has not been named. Recently, former executive producer Mike Richards was given the job with Bialik on board to host spinoffs and primetime specials, but he only lasted for a week’s worth of episodes before stepping down due to backlash. Mayim Bialik has made it clear she wants to get the full time job, and something that could help her case is the rise of the ratings after she started guest hosting again.
