Picard Season 2 Trailer Announces Release Date, Season 3 Renewal Is Confirmed

Wednesday’s Star Trek Day streaming event brought a lot of joy to Trekkies around the world with numerous announcements, trailers and special appearances by the stars of the sci-fi franchise. Among the big reveal, Sir Patrick Stewart appeared to introduce the trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Picard, which follows on from his triumphant first season return as Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The trailer announced the new season will kick off on Paramount+ in February 2022, and not only that but season three has already been given the green light.

The Star Trek panel also included Stewart’s co-star Jeri Ryan, executive producer and showrunnner Akiva Goldsman, and The Next Generations Wil Wheaton moderated the panel. The trailer set up the rumored time-travelling storyline that will see the cast of Picard heading back to the 21st century in an attempt to rectify mistakes of the past, showed some more footage of John de Lancie’s Q, and gave a first look at Annie Wersching’s Borg Queen. Stewart once again will be reprising the role he played across seven seasons of The Next Generation, and comes with a whole ensemble of familiar and new stars to the franchise including Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera and Brent Spiner.

News of the second season entering production was first revealed during the Star Trek “First Contact Day” back in April. The panel at that event also hinted at the continuation of Picard’s story would involve time-travel, although there was little confirmed at the time unless you were willing to dive deep into the discussions. The teaser for the second season involved a monologue from Stewart’s Picard, which talked about the final frontier of time, and featured an hour-glass with the sands running the wrong way. The inclusion of John de Lancie’s Q, who was a known manipulator of time, was the biggest hint to come from the reveal, as well as his spoken line from the series finale of The Next Generation, an episode that saw Picard time travelling both forwards and backwards. Q’s involvement in the original series also included him meeting Picard in the afterlife and being given the option of going back in time to alter his life and events that lead him down his chosen path.

Digital Imaging Technician Ryan Kunkleman made a post on Instagram last week which signaled that the final episode of season 2 had wrapped, giving fans hope of seeing some news about the premiere date this week. In his post, he also gave the first hints that season 3 was ready to go when he wrote, “That’s a wrap on season 2 of @startrekpicardofficial. Such an amazing experience 12 year old Ryan would lose his mind if he knew he was going to get to work with @sirpatstew @jonathansfrakes Love this crew so much. Gonna miss those that had to leave for season 3.”

Earlier in the year, John de Lancie announced the news of his return to the franchise in a cameo video in which he said, “Q is coming back. As a matter of fact, for the last two weeks I have been filming on Picard and really annoying Picard – really annoying him. [laughs] Patrick was delighted to see me for the first couple of days and after a couple of more days of really annoying scenes, he said, “So, how many episodes are you doing?” In other words, ‘When are you going to get out of my face?’ And the answer is six episodes. I think they are going to be coming out – actually, I don’t know. But we are shooting season two and three all at the same time right now.”

Star Trek: Picard will come to Paramount+ for its second season on February 2022.
