  • Roy Wood Jr. Comments on Possibly Taking Over as The Daily Show Host

Roy Wood Jr. is putting his podcast on pause after confirming that he’s in the running to take over from Trevor Noah on The Daily Show.

Comedy Central

The Daily Show’s Roy Wood Jr. can’t say for certain that he’s going to get the job of becoming the next full-time host, but because it’s a possibility, he’s making the necessary preparations. In November, former host Trevor Noah announced that he was leaving after seven years on the show. It has since been announced that celebirty guest hosts will come onto the show on a revolving basis until the producers decides who will stick around permanently in that role.

On his podcast, Roy’s Job Fair, Wood commented on his odds of becoming the new host. He said he would be pausing his podcast, effective immediately, as he tries to figure out what will become of his spot on late-night television. The funnyman remarked that it was a tough decision, but with uncertainty over the future of his career, his focus needs to be elsewhere at this time. As he said, per Deadline:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“This will be the last episode release of Roy’s Job Fair for a little while, while I figure out what the f*** to do in the world of late night. This is not an easy decision to come to. I went back and forth [asking] ‘I don’t know do you pull a Trevor Noah and say what you’re gonna do beforehand, or do you just do it on the last episode and I figured we’d do it on the last episode.”

Specifically addressing the potential of becoming permanent host, all Wood can say is that he’s in the running, and he needs to brace for the possibility that he doesn’t end up sticking around, also citing how other streamers and networks have been slashing budgets for late-night and reality shows. With his future in the air, Wood just doesn’t want to suddenly wind up without a source of income.

“My future at The Daily Show is not promised, in terms of hosting. Do I want to be in consideration for hosting? Absolutely. Am I in the hopper as one of the many guest hosts that will be coming up in the next couple of months? Absolutely. But in the interim, not knowing how that’s going to go. I got to put a couple of the pots on the stove, man, and I got to make sure that one of them bits pays off.”

Who Will Host The Daily Show?

Paramount

It remains unclear who might host The Daily Show, but there have been some rumblings in the rumor mill. Deadline previously reported that one possibility that’s in consideration would be to feature two co-hosts. Wood was specifically named in that reports as someone who could possibly co-host the show with fellow correspondent Desi Lydic.

For now, celebrity guest hosts will be filling in while Daily Show producers figure out exactly what to do moving forward. Leslie Jones will be first up when the show comes back on Jan. 17 on Comedy Central, and she’ll be followed by such names as Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman, Al Franken, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, and Marlon Wayans.
