The Boys Herogasm Episode Almost Lost One Scene Due to Amazon Rules

The Boys delivered some graphic images in its latest episodes, but Eric Kripke revealed one scene in particular caused problems.

Prime Video

The Boys made quite a build-up to their Herogasm episode. While the overwhelming consensus is that it was one of the best episodes in the series to date, there were many who felt that the actual Herogasm event itself was not as graphic as it was promoted as being. Despite that, there was still one moment from the episode that Prime Video was a bit dubious about airing, and creator Eric Kripke recently broke down exactly what it was that had Amazon execs in turmoil.

The Boys spent a whole week building up the hype for their Herogasm episode, even preceding the episode itself with a warning that the episode was “not suitable for anyone”, along with a number of other notes about the graphic content, depraved activity and sights that should never be seen by human eyes. Of course, that led to plenty of interest in the episode when it premiered on Friday. While speaking to TV Line, showrunner Kripke explained that due to Amazon’s Standards and Practices department having a strict no-go for any kind of bestiality, which led to one scene in particular scene involving The Deep and a very friendly octopus. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

We had a lot of discussion this season about the scene with Deep and the octopus.

For some crazy reason, Standards has a policy against bestiality. They’re so uptight, really. The discussion of that scene and how we pulled off that scene actually triggered a lot of alarm bells at a lot of different levels at Amazon because you’re not supposed to show people f–king animals, and I get it. But my pitch to them was always like it’s so absurd [that] it wouldn’t be out of place in a Farrelly brothers movie. So it’s hard to call it prurient bestiality. It’s ridiculous. To my knowledge, I don’t even think octopi have orifices down there. So there was a lot of discussion of like what are the shots, and what can we do and what can we get away with?

But that was really the first time it ever became conversations where they had to run it up the ladder.

The Boys Took Aim At Gal Gadot’s Imagine Video

The Boys have been known for a number of things. Gratuitous violence, blood, sex and for being a parody of everything related to the superhero genre. On Friday, the episode opened with a parody of the much ridiculed Gal Gadot Imagine music sing-along that the actress instigated during the early part of the Covid lockdowns, and that led to a large number of unexpected cameo appearances.

Many will remember the celebrity-filled version of Imagine that saw Gadot’s attempts to lift spirits turn into something that everyone agreed was more than a little cringy. The Boys turned out their own version playing into the cringe factor effortlessly, and as well as plenty of Supe appearances they also brought in Patton Oswalt, Josh Gad, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, Elizabeth Banks, Kumail Nanjiani, and Rose Byrne. All in all, it was just another reason that the episode was a winner with fans.
