‘We’re Here to Help Writers’

Shia LaBeouf was once a common face in huge blockbuster franchises such as Transformers and Indiana Jones, and also received a lot of critical acclaim as the writer of the autobiographical movie Honey Boy in 2019. It therefore seems strange to discover that the star had attempted to enter this year’s Finish Line Script Competition, a contest that aims to give new writers a step up into the industry with script feedback, guidance, and mentoring. Although LaBeouf has frequently found himself on rocky ground due to infrequent revelations about his private and personal life, he is certainly no industry newbie, and for that reason, the contest chose to make an official public announcement via their Twitter account that LaBeouf’s script had been rejected from the competition.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Since making his debut on the Disney Channel as a child, LaBeouf has experienced massive success in the movie industry, appearing in Michael Bay’s first Transformers movies, and played the son of Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But over the last few years there have been many stories about LaBeouf that have tarnished his fame and seen his career take a bit of a dive. It seems that his latest act has not done much to enhance his Hollywood reputation, either.

Finish Line Script Competition’s tweet about their rejection of the actor’s script was met with a lot of angry replies from those who believed that even attempting to enter the contest was wrong. While the contest organizers made it clear that they had refunded the star’s entry fee and had not even read the submitted script, it is certain that this stunt has not done the actor any favors with fans or those in the industry.

The Finish Line Script Competition Turned Down LaBeouf As An Established Star

Like many contests of its type, The Finish Line Script Competition allows writers from all over the world to submit scripts for an entry fee, with the winner being awarded a reasonable monetary prize of $1500 and the chance to meet with professionals from the industry who may, or may not be able to help them become a new writer in Hollywood. Considering LaBeouf is currently worth around $25 million, and has already won awards for a movie written by him, it is clear to see why some would take offense at the star attempting to claim such a prize for himself.

The troubles of LaBeouf have been well reported, from lawsuits filed by ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs, which led to a public apology that didn’t really gain much sympathy or support for him, to comments made about his “toxic behavior” on set that have led to issues with co-stars, and even led to him being fired from Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling.

The action by The Finish Line Script Competition may not have been one that LaBeouf wanted to see, but for those who have entered the contest, the transparency of calling out the actor for his attempted submission has shown them to be focussed fully on newcomers to the industry and not simply allowing anyone to jump on the bandwagon. This means it will be back to the drawing board for LaBeouf and whatever script he was hoping to have seen.
