Better Call Saul Season 6 Begins Filming, First Set Photo Shared

Filming has officially begun on the final episodes of the Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul. Since 2015, Bob Odenkirk has been leading the AMC drama as Jimmy McGill, the eccentric attorney first introduced in the original series under the alias Saul Goodman. It will all come to an end with the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul, and a set photo tweeted by executive producer and co-creator Peter Gould has revealed that the first day of principal photography has started.

This means that the production of Better Call Saul is right on schedule. Bob Odenkirk had previously said that the plan was to start shooting in March. Last month, series star Michael Mando also tweeted that he was on his way to the set. While we have yet to see a first look at Odenkirk, Mando, or any of the other stars in character from the shoot, it should be good news for fans to know that the cameras have finally begun rolling.

Better Call Saul stars Odenkirk as Saul Goodman with other returning Breaking Bad stars including Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut and Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo Fring. Guest stars from the original series like Lavell Crawford as Huell Babineaux and Dean Norris as Hank Schrader have also been featured, though Breaking Bad leads Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul still have yet to appear. In a recent interview with Collider, Odenkirk addressed the possibility of a Walter White return.

“This I do not know. I’ve only got the first two [scripts], so I hope that that happens. I’ve heard that rumor, but I have not seen anything factual that it’s going to happen yet,” Odenkirk explained. Bryan Cranston has also been open about his willingness to return to the spinoff series for a cameo if asked, but it remains to be seen if the writers find a place for Walt and/or Jesse in the show’s final season.

“I would be in it if Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, who are co-executive producers on it, wanted me to be in it,” Cranston told Collider last year. “I would do it in a second. But it hasn’t happened yet, I can tell you, and we’ll see. I don’t know. There’s one more season to go and we’ll see what happens!”

For the characters on Breaking Bad, fans already know what ultimately will become of them, so there’s a lot of interest in what will happen with the show’s original characters. Breakout stars like Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, Michael Mando as Nacho Varga, and Tony Dalton as Lalo Salamanca have won over fans over the course of the past several seasons. As none of them appear in Breaking Bad, it’s possible all three could wind up dead before the series folds, much to the concern of many fans.

The final season of Better Call Saul will likely premiere sometime in early 2022, but an official release date hasn’t yet been set. Although it will be the end, the good news is that the extended season will consist of 13 episodes, giving the show some extra time to properly conclude all of the show’s open storylines. This news comes to us from Peter Gould on Twitter.
