James Gunn Has Bad News for the Ayer Cut and Legends of Tomorrow Fan Campaigns

James Gunn addressed the numerous DC fan campaigns, and gave a disappointing response to those petitioning him with social media hashtags.

James Gunn is probably one of the most active film directors on social media. Since taking over as co-CEO of DC Studios on November 1, Gunn has been a little quite on the Twitter front…until today. Across several posts, Gunn acknowledged and addressed the frequently raised hashtags from fans of some of the canceled DC shows and the legendary Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, which seem to have swelled in number since Gunn and Peter Safran were given the keys to the DC kingdom.

In his posts, Gunn lay down the current focus of the new regime, which does not currently involve looking to the past but is all about new projects across various mediums. In length, Gunn said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful. As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey, & will continue to do so for the next few years. But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects. We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

Will The Ayer Cut Ever Be Released?

While fan power was a big factor in the Snyder Cut of Justice League being released, those asking for the fabled Ayer Cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad to follow seem destined to be left wanting. There have been plenty of conflicting reports of the cut even existing in any usable form, and it has always been unlikely that WBD would be interested in spending any more money on it.

From Gunn’s comments, it also puts paid to the possibility of canceled shows like Legends of Tomorrow returning to screen in the immediate future. With all of the recent cancelations coming at the hands of WBD CEO David Zaslav as part of the company’s restructuring and cost-cutting, there were never any hopes of those decisions being reversed by the appointment of Gunn and Safran. Now, fans of the DCU will have to get on board the new and exciting future of the franchise and try to forget the might-have-beens such as the Ayer Cut.

Of course, no one is really expecting Gunn’s comments to completely stop any of these social media campaigns, and they will keep popping up from time to time during the year. Whether Gunn’s direct response to these hashtags will have any impact on the frequency of their appearance is something that only time will tell.
