Trick ‘r Treat Sequel Won’t Bring Back Original Cast Members, Director Says

Trick ‘r Treat has become a beloved Halloween classic in recent years. Directed by Michael Dougherty (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Krampus), Trick ‘r Treat debuted straight-to-video back in 2009 but has gained a cult following over the years. Dougherty recently revealed that a sequel was in “very active development” at Legendary Pictures, as Trick ‘r Treat hit theaters this month for the first time ever.

However, Trick ‘r Treat 2 isn’t a done deal just yet. Legendary has yet to officially greenlight the project, but Dougherty is confident the long-gestating follow-up will happen this time. In an interview with Nerdist, Dougherty teased what to expect from Trick ‘r Treat 2 and said that the film is unlikely to feature any of the original stars.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“No, because I feel like that’s very much American Horror Story’s approach and style. I’d rather stay consistent. If I’m bringing cast members back, it would be in the same roles, not that that’s currently a plan within the piece. To me, it would throw me off. I do like it in American Horror Story. I think it works for them, but it’d also feel like we’re just ripping them off if we did that.”

It’s been over a decade since Trick ‘r Treat terrified audiences, and most of the characters either perished in the film or the actors have aged significantly. Quinn Lord, who played Sam in Trick ‘r Treat, is also open to returning, but he’s probably too old for the role now. The Trick ‘r Treat sequel could also further expand on one of its four storylines, but the whole anthology narrative is what made the original stand out. Hopefully, Dougherty will find another unique and horrifying story to tell.

Trick ‘r Treat 2 Will Not Explore The Origins Of Sam

Warner Bros. Pictures

Trick ‘r Treat introduced one of the most iconic horror characters of the century, Sam, or Samhain, a Halloween enforcer who goes around making sure that no one is breaking traditions. Sam is shown as a little child in a burlap mask who in reality, is a demonic being.

Michael Dougherty isn’t too keen on exploring the origins of Sam in the Trick ‘r Treat sequel.

It’s one thing to create a fun, mysterious origin for a character, but I feel like a lot of studios over the years have sort of overthought it. They just start adding too much, to the point of it being layered with all the layers. Like with the Halloween stuff [in Halloween 5 and 6] where it’s like cults, and the curse, and these tattoos. I was like, “What the f*** are you talking about?’

With Sam, there are definitely aspects of his lore and his mythology that we could expand on, and I hope to in terms of how he comes back year after year, where he goes to, and things like that, but I would never do any sort of flashback to ancient Ireland and show some kid being sacrificed and throw him to a pumpkin creature. That would just ruin his mystique.

It’s always better to leave some character’s origins to the fans’ imaginations, and Sam is one of them. However, there are several other characters in Trick ‘r Treat that are worth exploring.

Trick ‘r Treat is currently playing in select theaters. Be sure to watch it the way it was originally intended.
